I have the same problem. I did as noted above. I expected a prompt to re install the device when the computer restarted, but it didn't come up. What do I do now? I'm a ditz when it comes to puters. How do I re install the optical drive?

Also, it is my fear that this is only going to be a temporary fix.

(Mine is a TS-L632H)

Please check if the CD drives are visible in My computer , if they are not follow this KB article and restart your computer and it will be fixed.

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

Enjoy!!!!

Hey, it's working without being re installed. I expected to have to re install it. I just put a cd in it and it worked.

I'm hearing of the problem coming back, but I don't know if they did this same thing or not, though.

This post is for Roy_ricky Stallion.
I also have a 4-month old Inspiron 1720 Laptop with a 'detectable'-but-by-yellow-warning-sign-in-Device-Manager TSST TS-L632H ATA CD/DVD Rom. Never worked. No official Dell/firmware links or updates have worked. Spent hours and days getting old and frustrated and loserly chasing the endless solution options offered on various posts and forums. YOURS is the only one that has worked :) At least it shows up now in Explorer and I can read and copy from the drive. I'm not tempting fate today to see if it will burn... another day.

But thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou for the help and relief and sanity your posts have finally given me.

Hurray indeed!!!

I've done this and it did not work. My situation . . . same computer, same OS, same DVD player as previous poster. . . DVD quit working a month ago. I am not getting any error notices. Yesterday had computer technician replace my old hard drive with new, bigger hard drive. He used this DVD player to reinstall OS and drivers, but when came to install application software, DVD player wouldn't read it. DVD can be seen at Computer, Devices with Removable Storage . . . it makes noise when you put in a CD . . . the curser briefly shows a spinning CD . . . the player can be opened and closed using the computer . . . it just will not read the CDs which I need to install applications.

I get an error of "This firmware is not compatible with the selected drive". I have already deleted the filters and triple checked the drive model info. I have also deleted the drive through Device Manager and re-booted. I have also used the cdgone.reg to no joy. Any ideas?

Just tried the fix that Ricky posted where you delete the drive and delete something else named the upper/lower something or other (that's techie jargon there!). Anyhoo, I might not have the correct words, but the fix worked! I'm thrilled! Thank you so much!

Just wanted to say thank you, that you rock, and you saved me untold frustration.

My Computer

Hi, I'm new to this forum and discovered it while trying everything I could to fix my new lap top. It is HP Pavilion dv5. It came with 64 bit Vista home. Due to problems with the network connection at work I upgraded the Vista to Ultimate. This apparently knocked out the TSST TS L633L drivers or at least they don't work. I've tried removing and reinstalling. I've tried different scans that all report the driver is fine. I get the error code 39 when working through the device manager. The Toshiba and Samsung sites have not revealed a patch to me.

HP was a lot of help: "we don't support the system when you upgrade".

I bought it at Best Buy and the "Geek squad" guy looked at it and ran his thumb drive with Avast and said I had picked up a virus. I've done full scans with 3 different antivirus programs that can find nothing (Avast, Kaversky, Norton) so I doubt that is the problem.

Has anyone else figured this out?
Thanks
