Today, reinstalled the machine sitting next to me with Server again, it got really messed up, bluescreens, freezing, just really broken. Planning to put Wordpress on there and get a sorta blog going, would be nice to mess around with.

Bought myself a new Mobo Bundle today, THIS, and wow, my PC is SO fast now. I had to reinstall to 64bit to make use of all 8GB ram, and because I was on Intel before, and now AMD.

When the price of DDR3 comes down I'm gunna buy another 8GB and throw that in there. I like to mess around with Virtual machines, so this bundle is perfect.
The USB3 adaptor for my FA GoFlex came today too, and wow, that's amazingly fast now too.

Win win, best £250 I've spent in a while!

Last night from 8pm until about 2:30am I was working on the living room, tearing out the fireplace to enlarge the room.

I'm thinking about building my own PC over summer, there's so many decisions to make though! Intel/AMD, NVIDIA/ATI etc.

Today, finally got the news at work that they are going to "set me up" with a laptop (something that I've needed for about 2 years now).
The begging question is, will someone in the front office get a new one, and i'll get a hand-me-down (like they usually do with their PC's) or will I get a new one, which would make more sense.

Which brings up the 2nd issue....if I get a hand me down, it will probably have XP still. If I get a new one, would they still be so anal about it and wipe it and put XP on it.
I don't understand why they are so stuck on XP. Everything we have will run on 7. They just don't want anyone other than the office people to have anything new or not obsolete. The current PC'o crap that I am using has XP. I've mentioned this problem before here, but it just drives me nuts. They are afraid to allow any "unneeded" internet access to anyone, so if I need to get to company websites, I have to have them "add it" to the whitelist, which creates all kinds of other problems when places redirect to a different domain(then that has to be added too, and so on...).
They have licenses for things like Office, and all kinds of stuff that's needed, yet, i'm still on a really old version of Office, so I can't open .docx files. the front office people have the latest of course. I actually have to mail it to someone in the office, they convert it, and then send it back to me. Holy hell, would it kill em to just update me to what they are using? For PDF's, i'm stuck with Adobe reader 6, which can't open half of the stuff I need to open either. Without any internet access, nothing gets updated, even the AV is a mess because of this.

I've bitched about this stuff for years, and none of it does any good because they don't trust anyone at all. If I keep bitching, it's just going to turn into a war, so from this point on, i'm just going to bug them for every little thing, so they have to take care of so many things maybe they'll have to rethink how things are done that they'll change it just to shut me up.

Unfortunately, software costs can run rather high for larger companies. If yours is small, then the investment shouldn't contribute much to overhead. The BEST and MOST USEFUL argument to make is that ANY TOOL that you use frequently throughout the day should work efficiently for you. If you're on an old computer running XP and it lags, then that makes EVERYTHING YOU DO take much longer. It could be as drastic as 2 months with a new system whereby the break even point is crossed, and every day after that keeps paying the company back in your increased productivity. It sounds like the time wasting issue you've outlined with using an old version of Office goes a long way to supporting the need for upgrading.

Now, the main problem is that if most of the company is on Windows XP, you have the added expense of upgrading software for a newer operating system. HOWEVER, with Windows 7, there is an XP compatibility mode. Therefore, I believe that you can install the XP licensed software and still use it.

One last thing to consider... is that you can always buy USED software for much cheaper than new. What's the latest version of office, something like 2010? I use 2003 on Vista. It works JUST FINE. I think you can get 2007 for quite a bit cheaper than 2010. Also, don't forget about upgrading computer RAM.

Issues:
-Nothing appears on the screen, not even BIOS apparently - screen works fine though
-Windows doesn't boot
-Hard drive doesn't show at all whilst in Ubuntu live CD

Other info:
-She has a Vista disc
-Ubuntu live CD will boot and displays perfectly on the screenn

Because she can't even access the advanced boot options page, I'm completely thrown; there goes last known good config, safe mode etc.

Also set up a local IRC network and installed mIRC + the Moo script on all the servers.
Now I can type a command on the IRC channel and get all the specs, and see the load on the servers CPU/RAM, useless, but it's nice to have.

Couple of screenies, mind the ugly colors, it was just so I can define them from eachother, when it's all set as black text color it's just a wall of text lol.

Just googling trying to find an album that was advertised on E4 today while watching The Big Bang Theory, I think it was called socha or something? Ibiza club tracks, 3 CD's, didn't seem to have a brand as in it was MoS advertising it, just one of them random ones.

I've gone completely blank, it looked like a nice album, wanted to buy it lol.

Holy Hell it was hot out today.

I went and redid my laptop(Windows7), getting rid of the user account that I was using and created a new one. One thing I found odd was that, while most of the stuff is there, programs like Chrome and the Workspace Email do not show up on the new account. everything else seems to be fine.
There's no trace of them as far as I can tell, but I haven't gone to the built in Admin account to check for sure.
