Well it's been a long wait for some of you, but SP1 has finally been released.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues; supporting new types of hardware; and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 also will continue to make it easier for IT administrators to deploy and manage Windows Vista. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone version can be installed on systems with any of the following language versions: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional).

You should now be able to grab SP1 from windows update or you can download the stand alone packages from the following links.

Download: Windows Vista SP1 Five Language Standalone

32bit Package (434.5 MB) (x86)

64bit package (726.5 MB) (x64)

Can someone explain to me what exacly is this download for? is it going to help me in any way to fix my mouse click offset? and why does it has so much memory? - Thanks

Hi Angel

Since I saw that your question is going unanswered so far, I'll answer it for you.

SP's are "Service Packs" and are major upgrades for the Operating System. SP's are cumulative, which means that all updates released before the SP was released, are included in the package along with some other system upgrades. Usually major compatibility issues are fixed in SP's and overall performance issues are fixed or tweaked if needed. Since no OS released will ever be perfect, SP's will always be needed to fix and tweak problems after the OS is released, and thay always roll up all the previous fixes (updates) into the SP's so that once you integrate it into your install DVD, you never have to d'load all the seperate updates again.
You probably have no idea about that last bit about integration into the DVD, but don't worry about that now. If you ever plan on reinstalling Vista someday, just post here about integrating the SP1 into your Vista DVD and someone can help you thru that.

About the memory question...I think you see that wrong. The little screenshot of the physical and available memory that was posted is not showing what SP1 needs or uses. I think he's just posting that to show that Vista now reports his full total of installed RAM after SP1 was installed. Anyone with a 64bit Vista and 4G's of RAM, were never able to see the full total because of a bug in Vista, but now that's fixed.

Oh yah, just about forgot...what is this about your "mouse click offset"? I doubt that SP1 will fix it but you never know..it just may...so give it a go and see what happens. You need SP1 anyway.
Do you have a seperate post regarding this click offset issue? I'll have a look see and see if I can help.

SP1 Public Download Now Available - Finally!

Just finished the upgrade on one of the two brand new Dell Vostro 200 Vista Business 'puters I'm working on.

After a little update to Windows Defender (I purposely did not install Live OneCare until after I knew that the Service Pack was going to be applied correctly, otherwise the standalone version of WD wouldn't have been active, since LOC disables it), Windows Update immediately found and downloaded SP1 with no problem whatsoever.

The whole ordeal was over and done with in less than an hour, with only one reboot involved.

So it appears that the "normal" procedure, at least with your run-of-the-mill OEM machine, is going to be an update to Windows Defender and then down comes Service Pack 1.

I had coincidentally tried to update Windows Defender last Monday (17 March 2008), right before the Tuesday release, and there was not one available for it, which leads me to believe that the Windows Defender update may somehow be linked to SP1, seemingly as a "prerequisite".

Apparently Windows Update will have to update Windows Defender first, before it will allow you to download SP1; I think this behavior was noted by another poster a day or two ago, so I'm merely confirming it here.

If anybody else encounters any anomalies or deviations from this, please let us know; this is truly uncharted territory at the moment.

However, so far, so good...

Appeared as update this morning (32 bit), took a long time to download, seemed to stall at 95%, but then installed fine in about 1/2 hour. ( Full download, which I didnt do, contains ALL previous updates)
Best news for me is that Adobe Flash is working once again in IE7 ([it always worked in Opera] - but my hair hasn't been restored.

My Computer

Sp1 installed fine took maybe 40 minutes from download to install. Have only rebooted once and it took a little longer than normal to boot.

What I did notice is that it connected to internet faster...usually last thing to connect after sidebar etc.

All my commonly used programs work fine. Will continue to do more tests.

Hopefully boot up speeds up after a few more re-boots

I just dowloaded the most recent Defender definition which seems to be a necessity based on some earlier posts but Update keeps telling me there are no more updates available -- no SP1. I'm in EDT zone is that any signifigance I wonder?

My Computer

It has taken me an hour to get enough guts to ask this seemingly simple question--
got a message from vista forum advising sp1 available - when i click on the link and see click for free download from error smart i do not think thats what i want???(or is it)
guess just not smart enough to figure out how to get into sp1 to download it....
But since u cannot see my face guess it will all come out in the wash as they say....

Interesting. After reading this thread due to the MUCH appreciated email (thanks!!), I went over to Microtheft's site and opted to go with the "smaller package" through WU. Sure enough, WU popped up and there was some jargon about SP1. I was excited to see it and didn't bother reading the specs. I was a like a caveman..."Ugh, ugh...SP1...ugh...click...goood!"

It started doing what it does...took a whopping 3 minutes at worst with a 9.5mb download. Um. Ok? That just doesn't seem right. So I let it do it's thing. It was done. No restart. Nothing. Nothing to indicate that it had done anything at all. So I checked my update history. That told me nothing to indicate I'd been retarded or anything.

Here's what I had listed for today...

Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB937287)

So after checking out MS, I find that it's a precursor (prep package) to SP1. So I go ahead and do a reboot since SP1 isn't showing in WU. What alarmed me was the posts that said 40 minutes, an hour, reboots...I was a bit confused when it took me 3 minutes and no restart. Hahaha, here I thought i was the mack daddy of them all and it turns out I'm just a burnt turkey. Ah well.

Just wanted to toss that out to you folks just in case someone encounters this and thinks they've just installed SP1....at least i'm hoping others out there can find my post helpful so that I don't feel like a complete tard.

Ok, enough rambling...off to use the link that was so graciously provided to us here.

i have been testing the SP1 RTM for around a month now, and i have to say that i am pretty impressed TBH, considering the slating it took from the media at its initial testing. it is very stable, the slight lagging that was there before, particularly when opening explorer is no longer there, transfering files from one HD to another HD, or partition to partition etc, is flawless and quick. the flaws have been ironed out, and Vista is runnng better than it ever has.

My Computer

First thanks for the email letting us know about the update to sp1.It was a nice suprise in my inbox lol.Downloading sp1 through windows update now 69.2mb.I just looked at update history and the defender update is down as installed earlier.I wasnt at my pc at that time so it did it automatically so i was able to see sp1 update as soon as i clicked on windows update.
will reply again when it is installed.

Am using vista home premium 32bit.

First, thanks for the e mail. I went to both Microsoft web site and windows update. Yes the windows is about 65MB while Microsoft is 434.5 MB. One question is why the difference in file size and if you use the windows update version (65MB) will you miss any important files? Currently downloading the windows update SP1, about 30 minutes. If I need to download the larger file let me know. Thanks.

Hi William,

You don't need to download the larger file from the Microsoft site. The WU version is compressed as well as only containing the updates needed for your specific machine (as i understand it). If you had not kept up with regular Windows updates, your WU version would be larger.

Enjoy!

Well, I did the standalone installation and now I'm receiving the error, "SSDP has stopped working." Any thoughts? It doesn't appear to be interfering with anything.
