I believe rep points are given for helping someone. I doubt its based on number of posts. It is based on the quality of what you post to that user.

you should NOT thank them by repping them back.

the more posts you make them more your ''rep power'' will rise,
this is the amount you give out.

you should be able to see the names of the ppl who repped you after they're comment...

as far as the SIG is concerned a lot of ppl do it, if there was a problem with it im sure ADMIN would have pulled it up!!

I am a newbie to this board and am constantly amazed by the level of expertise and understanding shown by other members. Sometimes I think I know the answer but am hesitant to jump in in case I make a fool of myself, or worse, screw up some poor sods computer.

The rep points I have been given have made me a little more confident. Better for me would be a moderators PM saying my advice was good, bad or "butt out".

I am an older computer nerd. The first computer I programmed was the size of a flat and had red and green valves. It could add up to 1000 (and that was about it. I learnt Cobol and Fortran, and wrote programmes for the first IBM mainframe in Australia. I used to be smart, but now I think I know nothing.

The help you provide goes far beyond fixing individual problems. This board provides me with an experience I could never get anywhere else and if I could I'd give all you guys rep points for the education you are providing.

I know the feeling, I used to work on some of the Honeywell computers.
Technology has moved on quite alot and alot of things have changed.
It does not take long to get back into it though as computer science has not changed that much.

It depends on which language you want to move to or find a compiler for a lanuage you already know.

This thing seems weird to me... I see the rep point as a "thank you, you made my day"-thing. Which means I give rep to posts I feel deserve recognition, and thank the poster for the effort (since I can rep posts that didn't actually help me, but was informative and well written). Do you often thank people for thanking you?
