ReBoot Time

OK. I disables DreamScene and uninstalled MacDrive. Here's my new boot time and MSConfig Startup entries:

WOW! That's a huge amount of BLOAT for a little Laptop to have to deal with.

NO Laptop should ever have Norton on it. That's the King of Bloatware!!!!

I recently reduced my own boot up time from 126 seconds (that's over two minutes) to just 50 seconds by running my new batch file to shut down 22 Services.

I also tweak the registry, to instruct the OS to load its "Kernal" into fast ram rather than always accessing it from the old S...L...O...W hard drive.
That causes another huge LEAP in system performance.

This is with Vista Ultimate SP1.

Oh well, I can only suggest......

Hi,

I have an Nvidia card also - I took the Nvidia driver helper service and Nvidia media center library out of startup with no problems.

You can take everything out of startup EXCEPT your security programs and see what a difference that makes.

You may prefer it and want to keep it that way - you can just start your other programs as and when you need them.

162 seconds was my reboot time...
It takes a lot of time to log off and reboot :\

10 Startup stratup entries on 13.

EDIT

Just removed some services and start up entries. and let's see how many time it takes this time.

EDIT

It dropped down to 112 seconds :D

On most laptops, the touch-pad driver will need to run, only if you're going to use the touch-pad. If you're going to use some other form of mouse, then the touch-pad driver can also be DE-Selected.
That's the "Synaptics Pointing Device Driver".

Again, I want to stress, that Norton is a huge resource hog and not even a very good Anti-Virus program. I once took 151 viruses off of a little PC that just had an update from Norton.
That included ONE that Norton said it found but could not remove.
My first step in improving the performance of any PC, for one of my customers, is to remove Norton and replace it with AVG.
AVG is a much better AV program, won't load down your PC and it's FREE!
Performance will take a huge jump in the positive direction.
I work about 16 internet forums, not just this one, and in every one you'll find people saying the very same thing I'm saying here.

My own "ServicesStop.bat" file include 22 Services that can be either disabled all together or just put into "Manual" mode.
In either case, those services are removed from the 'Boot' process and greatly speed up that process. Then the overall performance improves as well.
I've run this batch file on the two Vista systems I have here with very good results and NO loss of functionality.

I wrote a similar batch file for XP several years ago and improved XP's performance significantly.

Cheers Mates!

I guess I'm confused......In that picture, it says it's going to RE-Boot in XX seconds....
But, how long does it actually take it to boot up when you turn it on?
That's the question.

Tried mine before the multi-CPU tweak, and got 179 seconds, then enabled 2 cores and got it down to 132 seconds. I would tweak some services, but I've had bad luck in the past with disabling services, even ones people recommend.

Funny how everyone's boot speeds increased, mine went from 86 seconds, to 126 seconds after setting the number of processors to boot from. I have learned from this experience: If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Well, you would think multicore boot would reduce the time, but not for me either...

4 cores = 121 seconds
2 cores = 92 seconds
1 core = 89 seconds

I think it either will or it won't, you're lucky or you're not...

Strange.
I think it may be because the system is fresh. When you have lot of programs and all, it takes more time to boot so, one core will take one hell of a time. If you enable 4 core, then, it should at least improve it.

Oh well... it's a mystery

Just an amendment to what I posted earlier. I think the times after my 4 core result were probably with some tweaking as now I get similar times with 4 cores on subsequent test reboots.

As it stands, regardless of how many cores I utilize, I am getting between 89-93 seconds reboot.

I am happy with these results...

does the "cold start" posted by Bare Foot Kid allow full functionality? I nearly have over 100 running at startup and I don't what half of them are. what would be different if I disabled services like Bonjour, WLAN AutoConfig, Virtual Desk, or Telephony?
