I got a question about CCleaner... is it a crappy program, looking at your posts, seems like its a great one. But is it possible to know if my computer has registry problems.... Or what? Or should i just install this as like a sort-of malware-protedtion virus protection - extra add on like thing? Know what i mean? :D

CCleaner is a great utility program used to do the quoted from their website below. You would run it as needed every so often to see if you have any junk or registry problems.

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!

Oh yea, this (CCleaner) combined with Auslogics BoostSpeed = Wow! Even try out the free. version of it, the few days you can use the BoostSpeed, it will make your computer go crazy with speed, And i.. luckily got an illegal but fully operational version of it... so im allll good..

Thanks for starting this thread on CCleaner!

I recently reistalled WinXP Pro from scratch and loaded all MS Updates, drivers and core software that I use. The system is still clean and pristine to this point.

If I run CCleaner's "analyze" on the registry, I assume it will show what it thinks can be safely removed, even if WinXP Pro is running perfectly right now. Should I go ahead and let CCleaner do what it thinks is necessary?

How do you experts determine what to allow CCleaner do to your registry?

Hello Sky,

Normally what CCleaner finds for the registry is safe to remove, but I like to look at the DATA and PROBLEM column to check and make sure that nothing is listed that I do not want removed. To be extra safe, you can create a restore point in case something gets deleted that messes up your system so you can do a System Restore to undo it.

Hi Shawn,

I'll review what CCleaner thinks is safe to remove, since my current situation is probably the best time to see what is OK "not" to remove, since my system is currently clean and pristine. It's probably as good a time as any to start gaining experience with CCleaner to be able to do what you're doing in making registry decisions.

I was following the "Setting up Vista for Speed Guide" found here: http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/228501-setting-up-vista-speed-guide.html and the author seems to not like CCleaner very much.

I have used the program before and it seems just fine, but is there any reason why someone shouldn't use this program to clean up their computer?

What do you think of CCleaner vs TuneUp Utilities?

Hello Odd,
As long as you backup your registry before doing anything with CCleaner, you will not have a problem.
When using CCleaner it will prompt you to do this.
I am not familiar with Tuneup Utilities, so i cant comment on that, but if you use CCleaner responsibly, you wont have a problem.
