hp recovery manager

Hi,

Looks like the recovery discs are corrupt.

You can't start the recovery partition in the normal way since the mbr changed when trying to install XP.

Try this :

X:\sources>DISKPART

DISKPART> SELECT DISK 0

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.

DISKPART> SELECT PARTITION 2

Partition 2 is now the selected partition.

DISKPART>ACTIVE

Diskpart marked the current partition as active.

DISKPART> EXIT

Leaving DiskPart...

Then close command prompt and restart. Remove the cd before retarting, obviously.

If you are lucky you will boot into the recovery partition and you can recover from there.

well it did boot into it but i still get an error lool. error is 0x400 100 130000 1002

fyi from be4 i chose partition 2 cuz it sed partition 2: primary size: 9gb offset: 102gb
and i figurted that was were my vista was cuz partition one had size 32gb and 32 kb offset lol

oo ok guys new discovery, be4 wen i was doin it i musta got mixed up wit my partition 1 and 2 cuz i was usin 2 and readin off siw 2's notes but now i figured i'd try again
and wen i assign the letter c in partition 2

says diskpart has encountered an error: the directory is not empty. see the system event log for more info

i think i before i might have accidently assigned a diff partition as c, so i just made partition 2 assigned to letter h tryin again now, but if this fails siw 2 wat else can i do :S

mm wen i boot comp i actually just have a black screen wit flashing underscore on top left corner now lol.

Ah - you needed to select the partition Vista was on to apply all the commands in my previous post.

You can try it again , this time select the correct partition - the one that was 32gb.

X:\sources>DISKPART

DISKPART> SELECT DISK 0

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.


DISKPART> SELECT PARTITION 1

Partition 1 is now the selected partition.


DISKPART> DELETE PARTITION

DiskPart successfully deleted the selected partition.


DISKPART> SELECT DISK 0

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.


DISKPART> CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

DiskPart succeeded in creating the specified partition.


DISKPART> SELECT PARTITION 1

Partition 1 is now the selected partition.


DISKPART>ACTIVE

Diskpart marked the current partition as active.


DISKPART> ASSIGN LETTER=C

DiskPart successfully assigned the drive letter or mount point.


DISKPART> FORMAT FS=NTFS QUICK

100 percent completed

DiskPart successfully formatted the volume.


DISKPART> EXIT

Leaving DiskPart...


X:\sources>bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Should get a message saying it was successful.

Then try using the HP discs.

um i think i did do that cuz i tried again lol, but i'll give it another go, but if this does fail again wat do i do, cuz i noe each day u have to go around this time and wont be bak til nxt day

u have a underscore . at the top corner. i have the same. but it goes to the boot menue

The underscore stays there because the machine can't find a bootable device.

Check it is right by typing

X:\sources>DISKPART

DISKPART> LIST VOLUME

It should show the largest partition as Volume 1 NTFS and it should also be the active (System ) partition.

umm my volume one is a removable type wit 0b no media o_O
vol 2 letter c is my biggest wit 102gb as a ntfs partition
vol3 is next largest wit 9gb and labelled presario_RP also ntfs partition
so am i meant to change my volume 1 the removeable to a diff volume and make my main one thats 102gb to volume 1 or sumfing?"
