was in charleston, south carolina from aug 89 to jan 97.

my memorable events at charleston:

>hurrican hugo struck charleson september 1989.
>invaded panama december 1989
>desert storm following year--charleston deployed 82d airborne from ft. bragg, north carolina (and lots more stuff)
>went to incirlik ab, turkey december 1993
>the rest is a blur

437th airlift wing saw first active squadron of c-17 globemaster. (got a chance to ride one to pope afb, north carolina for tdy--way better than c-141)

(oh, and the boeing plant that builds the c-17s is about 3 or 4 miles from where i live, so i still get to see the c-17 flying around...)

working backwards here...

at elmendorf afb, alaska jul 1986 to jul 1989

really didn't like it all too much there (too young to appreciate where i was at--growing up in southern california didn't help my attitude either)

WartHog; Ditto on the signature, nice touch. 'Waaay back when', the double rocker was a Chief M/Sgt... was that what you retired as?

mpcrsc562; C-17's... In Tacoma, those HUGE 'mothers would come lumbering down Interstate 5 on the final to McCord AFB. I was always apprehensive about one falling out of the sky and wiping out a couple miles of EVERYTHING ; but luckily it never happened!

in response to the uppermost comment, the insignia was changed when i was still on active duty, although i cannot remember exactly what year. it used to be that the double rocker was chief--the powers that be removed one stripe from the bottom and moved it at the top begining at master sergeant. so, now it's: 1up=master; 2up=senior; 3up=chief.

the lower comment: i live in the exit flight path from long beach airport, so not only do i see the behemoths known as c-17s, but almost all of the commercial traffic as well. it gets scary at times seeing those things hanging in the air...

26 years , 5 months , 12 days . And loved it !! USA Medical Corps

ree1; Medics can be really handy at times ;)

mpcrsc562; I did not notice the third lower stripe was gone! Wonder where that 'wild hair' idea came from anyway

While in the service stationed in Aurora, CO, I lived in a house under the (then) East-West runway of Denver International. Planes would <almost> start their tires spinning on my roof. When anyone local would be talking they would pause without comment as the plane passed. When someone from out of the area was talking, their mouth would continue to move but nothing was heard above the ROAAAAR!! After awhile the windows were loose in the frames
Hope you don't have it that bad!!

The MSgt stripe moving to the top makes more sense when you think of MSgt, SMSgt (what I retired as), and CMSgt as the "Top 3."

I served in the Army from 1960 - 1980 (been retired for years). I was in the data processing field in the service and after I got out.

I've retired a number of times since <g>.
