Host Process for Windows Services has stopped working

Hi wither,

Hmm, that event log has stumped me, I was expecting a few entries to be repeated throughout the log but there isn't. None of them are repeated so it doesn't really seem like there's a fault with any of them The only thing that I can think of that's left is to do a repair install:

This is a brand new installation. Not going through that again. But I appreciate your help. Will let you know if anyone responds to my Netgear forum thread.

It's not a clean install, simply a repair one You won't lose any of your files or programs. But it isn't a problem if you don't want to do it.

I've asked someone else to come and give you a hand

I don't have a repair disc and, as I told lottiemansion in my other thread, the procedure for creating one requires that you have a full installation disc, not the OEM disc. Puts you in a catch22. I'm not ready to go down that road until I get the router software issue put away.

Oh sorry, I didn't realise you don't have retail discs Okay, well hopefully the NetGear forum will be able to sort that out for you.

I did get one reply which said I don't need the software. The responder also said that the NVIDIA nForce network used a firewall. I'm looking into that but haven't found it yet.

I haven't gone away. Based on what the netgear responder said, I'm not going to try to install the software. It's just an aide to get people like me setup. It makes sense, the router is invisible to the computer and there's no driver. I did find that I had two NVIDIA nForce Networking setups and one didn't have the cable connection so I disabled it. Didn't try to reinstall the software.

The three things this error does is shutdown Task Scheduler, Windows Management Instrumentation and the iSCSI Initiator. I put the WMI on automatic the other day and so far I haven't seen an error with this. I'm wondering if the problem is in internet explorer. Since this happens only when I boot with the router plugged-in, it's baffling.

Does anyone know why IE doesn't show up in Programs and Features? Any other ideas?

Sorry for the late reply, I had an exam today so I've been quite busy.

That's intriguing, what version of IE are you running?

If it isn't under Programs and Features, it'll be in the list of installed updates:

1. Open your start menu and type appwiz.exe in the box and click on it
2. In the side panel, click on View installed updates

It should be on that list

Got that from IE.

Windows couldn't find appwiz.exe.

Okay, have you tried upgrading to IE9?

Thanks about the .cpl. It just pulls up what's in the Control Panel as far as I can tell and IE isn't shown. I can't install it again because it says there's a later version installed (probably updates). I could go look for the uninstall.exe.

I like the look of IE 7 and 8 better than v9.

Sorry I've been slow to respond. I tend to put other peoples problems ahead of mine so I'm 2-3 hours in the other forum and by the time I do other things around the house, I forget to check here.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to you, I've got a few exams this week so, as you can hopefully understand, I'm very busy at the moment. My last exams is on Thursday, so I wont be able to spend much time here until then.

Yes, that .cpl file does exactly that, it's just a little faster

It's no problem at all, your reply times have been nothing compared to mine!

I still have the same problem.

If I unplug the router before a boot or restart, no problem occurs. I can plug it back in once Windows is loaded and no problem occurs.

If I have it plugged in when I boot, the problem doesn't occur until well into the Windows loading process. I will have the desktop up, everything in the trays and the sidebar. The hard drive keeps buzzing away and after 2-3 minutes, I get the error. I don't know what's turning off the Host Process resulting in the iSCSI Initator and the task scheduler being turned off. It was turning off WMI but, it hasn't done that since I set WMI to automatic.

I thought maybe an add-on in IE may do it but I disabled some of the add-ons and that didn't change anything. I ran malwarebytes- nothing. As I already described, I turned off all the Services (except Microsoft) and Startup items in msconfig.exe and the problem still occurs, so I can't really attribute it to Norton or any other software.

I have attached the batch file with this post, please could you download it and run it. This script will query your system for information about its services, then write that output to a text file and open that text file. When it finishes, a notepad window will open containing all of the information, can you please copy and paste all of it into your next post.
