HELP!!!

I bought a new top of the line laptop one week ago with Vista Business X64. Windows will be working fine and then will reboot stating that an error in the operating system has been detected and a re-start is required. I tried using the recover disk to correct the problem but it tells me that a recently added camera or external device is disrupting the system. I have not added a camera or external device. I'M FED UP WITH TECHNOLOGY - I bought this laptop as a result of a catastrophioc failure in a laptop that was 15 months old.

I'm sorry to hear you're distraught from technology. Let us try to help, there are some very patient people on this forum kindly willing to help.

One thing I can suggest to begin with is a system restore. It can be done from the recovery disk, or from inside windows (press Windows+R, type rstrui and press enter). If you have restore points, you can select to what time and date you want to restore your system. Choose the last one before this issue happened.

Post back and let us know if that helped.

Thanks, I tried this and it tells me that an external device is causing the system to shutdown. I get a box telling me that a Microsoft is searching for a solution and that I will be notified. This has been happening for 4 of the six days that I've owned the computer.

System restore didn't work? I really expected it to...

Best for now is probably to look for the problematic "hardware" in device manager. Press Windows, type device manager and press enter. Look for an item that has any warning sign next to it (it's probably under Other Devices, though it might be under Imaging devices since it thinks it's a camera...). Once we find the one that is causing the issue, you need to right click on it and select Uninstall -- careful before uninstalling devices from the computer, I suggest listing the problematic ones here and get a second opinion before uninstalling devices from the computer.

Another thing to try is Windows Update (press Windows, type Update in the start search and press enter). Install whatever updates you may find there.

There have been two service packs released for Vista (SP1, and SP2), both should be found in Windows Update. Each takes a little time to install, but they fix a lot of issues. To see if they're installed, press Windows+Pause/Break. Under Windows Edition, it should say Service Pack 1, 2, or nothing. Make sure you have SP2.

Did you install Vista yourself, or did you get it pre-installed with your computer?
