if you're getting crashes at install it is almost always DRAM. Getting 8GB to work is a challenge anytime, so it might be easier to install with 2 or 4GB. I had to input my memory volts & timing manually.
I agree with Z3r010. don't flash your bios especially when we don't know why the first one failed and you have urgent need for the computer.

I tried it with 2gb and 4 gb and then 8 - same thing
All settings are on auto so I may change them manually ( I think the ram was previously 1.9v )
Gskill CS5 6400 800mhz I'll have a look on the website
- Package : 4096MB kit (2x2GB) dual channel pack
- CAS Latency : 5-5-5-15 (PC2-6400)
- Test Voltage : 1.8-2.0 V
- Speed : DDR2 800MHz (PC2-6400)
- Type : 240-pin DDR2
- Error Checking : Non-ECC
- Registered/Unbuffered : Unbuffered
- Quality Control : Comprehensive rigorously tested in pair at dual channel environment
- Warranty : Lifetime
Trust me I won't flash it.
I'll do the timings first then see if a reinstall makes a difference on a different drive - just in case I need to preserve my original setup.

OK there's a lot of stuff in the Ai tweaker.
First off
under dram timings control it states the following under auto settings,
1st information : 5-5-5-15-3-52-6-3
2nd information: 8-3-5-4-6-4-6
3rd information: 14-5-1-6-6
I've seen the 1 st information for my ram before I don't know what the rest is - shall I tap those numbers in manually?
Geezer10 you have a very similar board I'm guess the bios is the same(ish) any pointers.

Here is another option: power supply. Possibly you're getting excess ripple from a leaking capacitor, this could cause memory errors both in flashing and memory access. Have a look at the pc health status, are the voltages steady? The next thing I would do is swap out that PSU and do a compare. There aren't too many other options.

@Ted....well, moral support counts too.....not to mention your 'enabling' of mobo / processor upgrades....it's a shame the upgrade had to happen this way but the end result is really good. Faster and better.
/logging off topic_cheers guys - great support
