This is why I buy gigabyte mb with backup bios. If it ain't broke don't fix it is good advice. Hope you work it out. I take it you don't have the mb manual. Go to MB manufactors site and look for a manual.
well if you don't need SLI its ok. I'm not impressed with the power draw - worse than p3X chipset - I believe the nehalem architecture will address that.
But its inexpensive compared to other Intel mobos and handles the fans beautifully with the Asus 6 engine utility. Ubuntu is a no go however.

I have the manual - but it's no good if the mobo won't post.
But, I hear ya.........and I'm kicking myself.....
EDIT: Geezer10 - I will only use one graphic card so I guess that's OK. How much juice powers your system - mine is on a 600w psu - should be enough.
BTW: Bios is definitely soldered on - I could RMA the board but I need a replacement asap and don't really want to wait weeks for that to happen.
EDIT #2: sorry Geezer10, just seen your specs.

Sadness man.. Good Luck.
I've jsut read that if I end up ungrading to a Q9550 CPU. an happen to get lucky and get the E0 stepping. then I'll have to flash my BIOS to a new one. thats only if I get the new stepping though. or even get that CPU. but I might be. so we will see.
I'll do some heavy research first after reading this. so Thanks for posting your experience so others can learn from it. +1 to you, and sorry at the same time.

sorry to hear that you have a soldered bios - all the recent Asus mobos I have seen are socketed - you would think DeLuxe meant something. I'm surprised Asus update verified the burn.
By the way, if your bios flash fritzed it may be due to electrical interference nearby - you may need an uninterruptible power supply or beefier surge protection.
I ran one of those power hungry 4850 graphics card with a 400W Zen PSU on an AMD mobo so sometimes quality of watts beats quantity I guess - I'm sure 600W is more than enough.

Update:-
Just bought a P5Q deluxe and swapped every thing out - all fine and dandy......
Bios posts and I can get into it OK to have a look around.
However, when I exit the bios it shuts down instead of resets - Is this normal?
And I get a blue screen just before Vista starts to load - Do I have to reinstall vista or run it from the DVD?
I have only have one disk and the dvd plugged in and bios flashes up really quickly 'no disk information' but recognises it in the bios - The bios also tells me I have 2gb ram when I have all 8gb plugged in ( tried just one stick and it still blue screens )
I don't have much time to see the BSOD codes as it turns off after 15 secs or so but I will try to note the errors codes down for you guys.
On the bright side, it has a bios back up on the board and they can be taken out.

And during the safe mode load screen it crashes at crcdisk.sys ( I think....or was it cscdisk.sys ) - also I have tired to run vista from the dvd but it shuts down half way through the loading screen.
Any ideas.
EDIT 4pm: I reseated all the RAM and all 8gb shows up OK now.
...and the Stock CPU temp seems very high @ 85 C - cant be right?
Edit2 6pm: I disabled all the marvell IDE, Lan1/2, and firewire and I managed to get the vista dvd to run but it drops the power half way through repairing - that must be an overheating issue surely!!! Why would it just cut out?

Hi usmc_nam_vet - that looks like an interesting and useful piece of kit. Not Sure I want to spend $500 on it though - can't see myself finding someone with it either.
@z3r010 I've just read that Core2's shut down at 85 c so I guess that's what's happened on that side - I wonder if I put the fan on correctly - I'll check that! The processor did fit OK in the socket and it closed fine - could be the fan - or thermal paste ( can you put too much on? ) - could this cause the bluey?
Was going to buy a new processor tomorrow (q9650) but will hold off until this issue is resolved.

make sure the heatsink surface is clean, then put a little bit on and spread it with something like an old credit card until you have an even very thin covering.

yeah I know - I was only half serious? actually I've read that the 0803 version is quite stable - Also now I've sorted the CPU the motherboard resets after the bios instead of shutting down - which is good.
I went for a system repair but that didnt help.
Memtest was good via diagonstics screen.
Do you think a vista reinstall would help resolve the issue?...it would be a shame to go through all that to have a bsod again....Maybe the boot sector is corrupt.
