Was looking on play.com for GTA4 and found the minimum requirements:

Windows XP with SP3 / Vista with SP1
1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4GHz AMD Athlon X2 64 or equivalent
1GB RAM (1.5GB for Vista)
16GB HDD Space
256MB nVidia 7900, ATi X1900 or equivalent
DVD-ROM Drive
Internet connection required for installation and online play

They seem pretty steep for minimum, more of a recommended. Especially the graphic cards, the 7900 is still quite a high end DX9 card.

There is a software issue on my end I am guessing...I have a GTX 295 nVidia and it is sluggish with the game at full settings. It sucks.

I am one of them. I can run Call of Duty W@W at 1900x1200 full settings and it runs fine, but with GTA its sluggish. :(

i can understand that because the 295gtx is effectively using SLI and the game doesnt support SLI just yet, so your pretty much using a single 260gtx.

i had a good few mods running on my GTA4, the ones i remember are listed below

steering mod....... this is a MUST if using the keyboard & mouse, it takes away the ''ice rink'' effect from the handling of the cars...

Ericsson phone mod......this is just a bit of fun, it changes his mobile phone..

heavy weapons mod...... gives you all heavy weapons..

Hitler mod...... changes nico to hitler...lol :p

no intro mod..... this one is great, remove all ads from game startup & load straight to game...

NYPD car mod...... changed from LCPD..

real car names mod.......pretty self explanatory...

& a few other little tweaks that all have to be replaced in the directory :(

I like the sound of that physic/graphic optimisation :)

Edit: Does that new security fix block the mod that Skunk posted?

First impressions are that the game runs a little smoother, again. Built-in benchmark shows a gain (in my case) of 3 fps (was 44, now I have 47fps in average). Not much, but always a little more. Don't know if the game refuses to launch with the mod to which Skunk pointed, because I'm not using it anymore. Just pure original GTA :p

sigh..... this patch ''has one again'' removed every mod ive installed....

& i cant understand how, ive removed the original files...??? it cant of replaced everything i modded, but it has & now i have to replace the lot...

i cant even remember which ones i was running now, i had so many......:(

i even tried a system restore in a last ditch attempt to save my old config, but upon the reboot GTA4 was still patched to 1.0.3.0.

yes Everlong, it will disable the graphics tweak....

its so bloody annoying, i just went to begin the file replacement fiasco ''again'' & gave up after 2 secs of looking at them....lol

IMO, keep the mods & forget the patches...... whatever rockstar can do, so can the modders....;)

god.....it plays like a bag of poo with no mods.....

Meh, it looks crap without that depth of field that mod gave :(

It should be alright in single player though. I think it's only multiplayer it blocks modded files.

here are GTA4 requirements

Minimum System Requirements

OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz
Memory: 1.5GB
16GB Free Hard Drive Space
Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

Recommended System Requirements
OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1Ghz
Memory: 2 GB (Windows XP) 2.5 GB (Windows Vista)
18 GB Free Hard Drive Space
Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 / 512MB ATI 3870

according to this your're qualified for the minimum ones. GTA4 is very dependant on the CPU. Probably you will have to decrease the details to lowest settings to run it smoothly.

im sorry to say, that dream of yours may well be shattered.....:(

my rig drops to about 20fps at some points on GTA4, & its ''leaps & bounds'' above yours my friend....

the game is very badly coded on the PC, hence the fact you need a GTX280 & a 4ghz OC to get a steady playable framerate.....this game is HIGHLY CPU dependent.
