Disk Cleanup will not clear shadow copies though. Instead it will only delete all but the most recent system restore points, and any junk files that you select. The only way to clear shadow copies is to turn of System Restore, but you will also lose that as well. Catch 22.
I do not use System Restore since I create full hard drive backup images instead on a regular basis onto a separate hard drive. These type of backups are a lot more reliable since System Restore only helps with system files and not any user files.
If you do not have Vista Ultimate, then the free Macrium Reflect is a good program to use to create hard drive image backups with.
Sounds good maybe i should unable system restore. I am on 32bit....what should i do next with this programme? Isit easy to use? I hope it will not give me too much problem. I am tired of the system restore eating up disk space honestly.
System Restore usually creates restore points automatically, and you can manually create them as needed or wanted as well. See this link for more details on it though. A System Restore is only good for quickly repairing Vista system files when the problem as just recently happened. It does not do anything to help restore files in the user folders.
Some 3rd party drive image programs can be setup to run automatically, but usually it is best to manually create them as needed to save hard drive space. A drive image is the most reliable of the two since it restores everything.
It's really up to what you determine your needs are. If you have the available hard drive space, then it may be worth it to use both to have extra backup protection.
System Restore is part of all editions of Vista. You can use it to create a restore point anytime you like. No need to install anything else for that.
The 3rd party program Macrium Reflect will work fine on your edition of Vista as well. This link below will show you how to create a schedule with this program to create image backups automatically for you.

You can only delete all but the most recent restore point though Disk Cleanup, or all of them by turning System Restore off and on. There is no way to control which one gets replaced. Vista automatically replaces the oldest dated one when a newer one is added and the max restore point space is used up.
Brink i had a question with my system restore. For the past few days, whenever i click on system restore, i can only see a "system restore files and setting" page. No option or selection is required.
Now this "system restore files and setting" page has 2 option coming up.....What is the problem here? The setting has change somehow..

Yes. At first i do not have those 2 options available(first picture). Only the Info on system restore. Now suddenly appears 2 more options. I just find it weird. I know i did not mess around with the setting. Why does this happen?
