Solved DVD drive will read CD but not DVD

Tried the Ubuntu route. Burned the DVD on my PC and it will boot into Ubuntu on the PC. It will not boot on my laptop with the DVD player problem. So is it a bad DVD player, bad laptop or a problem in Windows? Maybe the replacement DVD player will be here tomorrow and cut things down to the last two possibilities. But then, I'll still have to figure out which it is. Hopefully the replacement will work, I sure don't want to reinstall windows only to find out the problem is in the laptop. HELP?

I do know a military term for days like today but I don’t think they’d let me use it in here.

Replacement DVD player arrived today stuck it in my laptop and what do you know, it showed up in device manager as such and in the 1st IDE Channel listed! Soft reboot, again it showed up; another soft reboot, showed up again. Did a hard reboot after changing my boot configuration in the bios because I wanted to see if it would boot from the Windows CD, NO DVD PLAYER SHOWED UP ANYWHERE! Changed my boot configuration back to normal and tried again, NOTHING! Uninstalled the IDE Channel on which the player was listed and Windows did reinstall it, but still, NO CD PLAYER IS SHOWN! Have tried about 20 times as of now, and NOTHING! When the player showed in device manager it was shown as a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA DEVICE, identical to my original player. I’m back where I started. What would make the player show up several times and then just disappear? Let’s see, I’ve tried everything that I’ve read about on the subject. FIX IT couldn’t find my player, could not delete any filters in the registry because I don’t have any UPPER or LOWER filters in the registry key (didn’t show any either when I first put the replacement in), creating a sub-key did nothing, uninstalling and letting Windows reinstall the IDE Channel applicable to the player produced also no results, replaced my player, did a system restore early on with no results. WHAT ELSE IS THERE?

There's something wrong with the BIOS maybe? Perhaps you need to update it or at least update the Chipset drivers? This really would be a question for a PC repair shop as I can only speculate here.

A hard reboot should show the same hardware afterwards as any other kind of boot.

There are no other updates available from HP for my model other than what I already have installed; got their latest BIOS version too.

Is there no PC repair shop near by that could take a physical look at what's going on there? That would be the best thing to do right now I think.

Think I’ll get a laptop IDE to USB adapter/box on e-bay, they’re cheap and will let you use the laptop DVD CD-Rom externally via USB connection. If one or both of the DVD players play through that, then it’s either Windows or laptop internals and I’ll have a means to uninstall and reinstall Windows. Don’t really want to do that but really have no other choice; also, I’ve blown out the laptop and cleaned the connectors.

Would a DVD/USB connection even work? Windows still would have to load the driver; but then I don't think it's a driver problem. Found where it all started at 10/06/2013 8:22:12 PM:

They are the entries from the event viewer log for 10/6 8:22:12, that's when the DVD quit.

Have you been running any kind of system check software, cleanup tools etc? That's all I can think of to blame.

Have run/tried just about everything that is available on my system and what's on the internet.

There's nothing indicated in the BIOS that might control DVD burning I suppose?

DVD burning isn't the problem, the DVD CDrom not being recognized is.

While on my laptop tonight for quite awhile, there ‘s an installation pop-up and the dvd drive is mysteriously installed! Have not done any reboots to see if it will come back. Anybody have any suggestion what I should do? Should I uninstall it and hope it’ll get picked up again? Driver is up to date. Right now I’m just afraid to shut off the computer.

Left the laptop on with no activity, dvd drive just disappeared, lasted about 10 minutes.
