well that did not work either, still an error that tells me to look in the error log which is on the first page that i had replied, i think there is something inside of my registry that could be messed up.

OK,

1- All flavors of Vista come with DX10…. Even the “upgrade” versions! No need to download
2- Vista and Vista only will have DX10. Thus…
3- You can’t download DX10 and install it on XP or any other OS.
4- Your NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS isn’t a DX10 card. Thus…
5- All games played with that card will be in DX9 mode.
6- Lineage II is NOT a DX10 game, so it will only play in DX9 mode.

So…

You can download all the redistributable files in the world, and though it'll update your DX files, it can't give you what your video card doesn't support.

Your video card MUST be DX10 capable to take advantage of DX10. Check your vendor’s website for their DX10 capable video cards.

The fact that you ran the game with that card just meant that the game was running in DX9 mode.

I see you’ve already checked your version of DirectX and it shows 10, so you’re good there.

So…with all that said, do you have the latest patch(es) for the game? Latest video drivers? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game? Do you have another game you can try?

If those suggestions don’t work, and you’re still having DX problems, then you may need to reinstall the OS, or you can try this...http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html?ltr=R, if you have a retail disk.

DirectX 9c is available at Microsoft too. I think your only hope is to try and setup 9c over the existing 10 that it is showing since your video card only supports DX9.

Try clicking here to download DirectX 9c from Microsoft.com

Sygnus, The DirectX redistributable installs updated dlls for DX9 and DX10 on a vista system (d3dx10_40.dll and d3dx9_40.dll most recently). So point 1 in your list is not true.

DX 9 will not overwrite 10. DX10 is backwards compatible; that means DX10 WILL allow DX9 games to function. No need to "try and setup 9c over the existing 10" because it will not overwrite 10 and make it 9.

DX9 video cards will play DX9 or 10 games; they will just use DX9’s extensions.

Yes, you can “update” DX10 under Vista, but it will only update the core DX9 files.

From the “DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

Brief Description
November 2008

“The Microsoft DirectX® End-User Runtime provides updates to 9.0c and previous versions of DirectX — the core Windows® technology that drives high-speed multimedia and games on the PC.”

And this note on that same page:

“The DirectX Redist is recommended for those users that do not have internet connection during installation or need to reinstall the DirectX 9.0c core runtime.”

Thus it will not update DX10, nor downgrade to DX9c

Again, if after installing either of these installers you’re still having trouble with DirectX, then you might need to reinstall the OS. But before you do that, I would suggest trying another DX9 game to see if you still have DX problems.

One other note: You can play a DirectX10 game on under DX9 or if you only have a DX9 video card under Vista or XP. Example: Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Lost Planet, Bioshock to name a few. You just won’t get the visuals the DX10 offers; and, some might argue, better gameplay, but that’s another discussion for another thread.

I know this because my first video card under Vista was a Radeon X1650Pro (DX9) card and I played Bioshock and the Crysis demo with it.

You can't run a DX10 game on DX9. The *only* reason Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Lost Planet, Bioshock and other games work on DX9 is because they are developed to run on DX9 if the system lacks DX10. Making a DX10 only game today would be stupid, as you would eliminate ALOT of people who haven't upgraded to vista for one or another reason.

And the fact remains, I got updated versions of the dx10 dlls when installing the dx redist. So whatever microsoft claims on their page, it did upgrade my DX10.

Yes and no, as it is mainly for DX9 updates, but OK.

Download details: DirectX Redist (August 2008)

"The DirectX redist installation includes all the latest and previous released DirectX runtime. This includes the bi-monthly D3DX, XInput, and Managed DirectX components."

“The DirectX Redist is recommended for those users that do not have internet connection during installation or need to reinstall the DirectX 9.0c core runtime.”

"So whatever microsoft claims on their page, it did upgrade my DX10" You'll have to argue that point with Microsoft.

As far as DX10 games playing under DX9, I don't make those rules, again, that's a debate with Microsoft, and the game developers. I'm just stating whats fact today. :)

Sorry.

Let me clarify something,

I just looked into my DX redistributable folder and do see some (presumably) updated DX10 files. So, yes, I would imagine some files have been updated.

However the bigger picture here is the reference that you can somehow "downgrade" from DX10 to DX9 under Vista, and that's simply not the case.

At any rate I would always recommend doing a DX update any time Microsoft releases one.

I too have had games (TimeShift, FarCry) act up till I updated my DX files under Vista. So yeah...update, update, update.

With regards to the OP's problem, I still say if the DX updates have not fixed your problem and you can't run any DX9 games, reinstall the OS. And in my book, OS reinstall should be the last and only solution left. I'm not keen on OS reinstalls just for the sake of it; but that's me.

Peace

In this particular case, since there seems to be no way to "repair" DirectX, the fastest way to resolve this particular mess is the dreaded wipe and start over.

Personally, I have another hard drive in my system where I keep all my downloads, documents, bookmarks, email backups and otherwise non disposable data. This makes it a much more painless operation to start over. It is a convenience that most can afford given the relatively low cost of hard drives these days.

Another use for the extra hard drive is the storage of a ghost image file made immediately following the re installation and configuration of your system after you have it "just the way you like it". The system can be set fresh in under an hour, even with a large image file containing some of your favorite apps already set up.

I agree with your backup assessment, and I too have extra drives for backs and program installs, mainly games.

However I personally still find it a chore having to reinstall and activate everything. I'm the type of person who has an OS up and running for long periods of time without doing a reinstall unless I have a problem that absolutely requires it, and even then I'm like, "is there a way I can get around this". I hate reinstalls.

But back to the OP's problem, did he find his solution?

There are way too many people not able to install this update for it to be something that needs a windows reinstall.

This is a MS screw up that needs to be fixed.

The new DX10/DX9 update.

""Initializing..."
then an error comes up saying.
"setup could not download the file. Please Retry later or check network connection."

I just tried downloading the "redist" version and that one did download.
However now I have funky anomalies in S.T.A.L.K.E.R

Looks like now I may have to change drivers.
Been running 178.13 I see that Nvidia 180.48 WHQL are available I guess I will try those.

I don't understand why that "setup could not download the file. Please Retry later or check network connection" error occurs. Maybe something to do with your network?

I've never experienced that problem myself, but as you've found out, the redist files work just fine.

As for S.T.A.L.K.E.R (a game I hate), like you said, it might be video card drivers, so...

Good luck.

Changed to 180.48's and STALKER is running excellent now.
Also tried Crysis with these drivers and it is running better also.

have it running "Ultra High mod" with all options maxed and at 1600X1200 and getting an average of about 29-32FPS.
