Dell Vista X32 Won't hibernate, sleep, shut down when lid is closed

This kind of looks like you may have a problem with security and group policies .... Possibly changes in the registry. Make sure Trend Micro isn't interfering and is configured right.

Tried the hotfix (x86 version) and it didn't work- it said it didn't apply to the version of windows I had installed....should I try the 64bit version?

Also (I think) restored all security and group policies back to 'stock' using Microsoft Mr Fixit or something like that.

Most of what was on those links were well above my paygrade :D.

So were you able to make a clean/new restore point?

BTW ... are you communicating with another machine? ... SQL server error

I think that might have to do with my office connection and remote desktop (?).

Still no luck on creating a restore point.

That may be correct. Be sure to make regular backups for your important files. Use a CD or DVD and name them, including the date.

I've just been copying everything and sending to my external HD.

I'm pretty sure at this point I'm going to have to do a clean install to fix the VSS and lid issue.
