Just a quick update. Earlier today, I booted into safe mode to then run a virus scan and malware bytes. Virus scan revealed nothing but malware bytes revealed and deleted some kind of trojan.

Since then I have noticed a not much of an improvement in performance and I still have this strange case of the RAM being constantly used around the same percentage.

Should I go ahead with the clean boot stuff that you mentioned?

Cheers for your help so far!

Try the clean boot. When you boot if everything is fine, follow the instructions to find the problem. We can do a memory test too if you like, later. But boot first.

Did the clean boot stuff and it was difficult to determine whether the problem exists in the services. At time there were differences in performance, but most of the time it seems to be fairly random.

At the moment I am just running my computer for a day or 2 to see how it is. Plus I have some web design to do which is fairly urgent.

Physical memory still remains fairly constant at around the 40% mark with low amounts of free physical memory. I could really do with someone telling me what their RAM usage is like in comparison to mine. I certainly thought that my RAM use was abnormal but I could do with a comparison.

I will get back to you about how my computer performs over the next day or 2.

Does that mean that me with 3GB, running nothing with 40% ish means that i have a definite problem?

Just checked it now about 20% 6gb X 2.0=1.2
Yours 40% X 3=1.2

I see nothing wrong there Bring up task manager and look at usage.

I wouldn't say so I think that Unused RAM is Wasted RAM and Vista itself uses about 40-60% of a 4-2GB RAM Computer This isn't unusual

Right, an update is needed.

I thought the performance is better, and at times it is, but I've noticed that after booting up it performs ok (still not like it used to) but progressively slows down. I'm also still not comfortable with this constant physical memory usage. To me i just dont think this was how it worked before the problems started.

I'm really not sure what is causing all these problems but its not virus or malware related i don't think, the clean boot process didn't turn up much but maybe i need to test each set of services over a longer period of time.

Windows update keeps asking me to update now btw due to the uninstalled updates, should i install these or leave the updates completely. Also if a new update becomes available, should i install that new update or not?

This problem is really frustrating me and i just wish there was a simple solution. Is there nothing that stands out which would cause problems such as these?

Since it was your initial opinion that the updates caused the problem, I would not reinstall, now. I would set update to inform and then hide all new updates until we get this resolved. On the taskbar right click and bring up task manager. Lets take a look at what is running and how much ram is used.

TY for the kinds words and rep; made me feel good

You have to show all process. You click the box bottom left on task manager. Also show the memory column, that is the important one.

Your very welcome, your help is much appreciated. Here are the screenshots, i did my best to catch them all but there were so many so i have had to try and get all of them over 3 different screenshots. Some may have changed order as the RAM etc they used changed but these should cover everything.

Are all windows closed, etc. Nothing running?

I have 6GB Memory. Only thing open for me is this window. I am using 23%. Close all programs etc. Leave one window open and your usage should be about double

This screenshot is with nothing running at all. No programs apart the usual anti virus etc that always runs.
What kept happening with the free physical memory is that it would go up to around 600-800 and then decrease all the way to 0, sit at 0 for about 5 seconds on average, and then jump up again to 600-800 and do the same.

Now this is posted, i will reboot into safe mode and then get some screenshots and a general feel of how the computer is working, reboot to normal and post again with my findings.
