Can’t Use Browsers After Attempting to install legacyupdate for Windows Vista

That's up to you but it's probably the thing to do just to answer the question about being able to use it. I have Windows Mail and think I can use it if I put in the login information. However, I haven't had time to do that ( guess I use my Microsoft account information). Perhaps I'll try it tomorrow but no promises.

I now have another problem, I didn’t know if I should start a new thread for this but when I try to turn on my computer I get PCI Express error. It was working perfectly fine last night so I don’t know why this problem would randomly crop up like this. I tried searching for what this error message could mean but I found nothing at helpful. Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I might resolve it?

The card in the PCI-E slot (most likely an NVIDIA graphics card) may have come loose, or may have failed.

There is no download link at the blog post you linked to. Does a download link exist for that specific version of Norton? I guess it’s been more than 4 years since you or wither 3 actually installed Norton on a Vista PC where it wasn’t already present, and there’s a recent post at Microsoft Answers that makes me think this might not be a “piece of cake” in 2023: Redirecting. He did not receive a reply from GreatWhiteWhale, but was correctly shown that Norton system requirements call for Windows 7 and above.

As I noted earlier, I was gonna handsome frog at Norton for charging so much. I called them today and they said the reason it was 4 times as high is because you get a "customer protection plan" when you buy from them. If your device get's hit by a virus and the Norton engineers can't fix it, you get a full refund. I said I wasn't interested in that and they offered me a $20 refund. I said I was thinking about cancelling my subscription and buying it online. They then said they'd give me a $45 refund. I suppose if I cried enough, they would have kept going but I accepted the last offer. Next year I'll buy it online.

I suspect that one would have to install Norton in order to run LiveUpdate, and it’s a safe bet that current versions of Norton cannot be installed on Vista - which is why there was only one question mark in my previous post:

Does a download link exist for that specific version of Norton?

I just followed a tiresome chain of old Imacri links. Back in December 2018, when Imacri was still running Vista and using “Maintenance Mode” Norton Security, Download Links for 22.15.0.88 were posted, and the links still work. This was obviously not the final “Maintenance Mode” version from the year 2020, but it seems plausible that LiveUpdate might be able to upgrade from there. By May 2021 Imacri was advising people to “contact Norton Customer Support via Live Chat and ask for download links,” but it’s not clear if anyone every actually did so.

When one buys a new subscription, one receives an installation file. I don't know if already having an copy of Norton installed makes any difference.

I just wish this forum would stop trying to sell Norton subscriptions to everyone who posts here. The situation is quite the opposite at MSFN: If anyone suggests there that Norton (or Kaspersky) might still be a good option for Windows XP, they are promptly pounced on by those who despise the product. (MSFN has become something of a nut house these days.)

You stated in this thread that “Windows update agent failed to install,” which is a specific Windows file (not another name for LegacyUpdate, which I never used). If I wanted to install the usual version of Windows Update Agent for Vista SP2, I would get it from Greenhillmaniac’s Windows Vista Update Repository because it is not available at Microsoft Update Catalog AFAIK. LegacyUpdate might have been trying to install the superior Windows 7 version for all I know, which would be quite a hack if it worked.

I have not posted anything so far as I am waiting for updates on my computer which I took in to repair Monday last week. It was the same person who repaired it before though this time he didn’t know about the problem so I had to send him two articles I found on the problem. The thing is that they are in Japanese so I had them automatically translated. Still he said that they would be of great help to him but I haven’t he anything more since then.

I already have a £1500 pound voucher to spend at pc world to replace my old one but I am holding out, modern laptops just suck no disk drive, no HDDs and hardly any usb slots. They might as well be glorified tablets. My voucher lasts for around 2 years so that gives a bit to wait and decide how I will use it. Though regardless of how spend it I still want to get my old Toshiba Qosmio repaired as it means a lot to me and it is has a very good design.

Happy 4th of July wither 3! As you may have heard, the Norton brand is now part of a multinational corporation called Gen Digital that also includes the Avast, AVG and Avira antivirus brands. Since you are literally the only Norton user that I know of now, I thought I would share something that I just saw at the Norton Community. You could probably confirm this on your Windows 7, but perhaps not on your Vista since the “Maintenance Mode” version hasn’t been upgraded for years:

Speaking of Windows 7, Firefox 115 is the last version that will support you so be sure to move to the ESR branch. If you ever buy a Windows 11 PC, I would suggest just using Microsoft’s built-in antivirus for a change. It’s been very good for the last 8 years now. Good luck!

I can confirm it in Win 7. Looks innocuous. I'm out of town so I can't check it on my Vista system. Thanks for the heads up anyhow.

I moved to Edge on this Win 7 system. For some reason, Firefox is disabling my touch pad (but not my jog shuttle) which are controlled by Synaptics.

I didn’t mean to suggest that the file is a threat: Only a sign that times are changing for the Norton brand. I was using Avast on Vista until my old hardware took a turn for the worse (but of course I didn’t pay any money for it).

I moved to Edge on this Win 7 system.

Edge is a good browser, but of course it no longer supports Win 7 so you will be stuck with version 109.

I would have gone to Edge earlier except I didn't know how to display the various bars, like the favorites bar. I've got that figured out now.
