One more question. What if I recovered just the software file of the registry?

Windows\System32\config\Software

My Computer

On a client's computer running VB 32bit I had the same problem - no updates. Windows Modules Installer could not be started -- The specified module could not be found.
I replaced the whole Windows\Servicing folder from Vista SP1 DVD - no fix.
As a last resort I used ProcMon to log what's going on when TrustedInstaller attempted to start. When filtered on the TrustedInstaller.Exe process I found that right before exit the process tried to open the file
C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_095f6148c74a7a64\wrpint.dll unsuccessfully.
I checked and found the file wrpint.dll was indeed missing from that folder.
I found the file in the immediate above folder
C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f6990
Broke permissions and copied the file. It fixed the problem, the service started and updates have been installed.

If you compare your and @MrWonderful threads there are really similar ;) -but there are also seriously difference
This folder:
C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_095f6148c74a7a64
is noticed in registry in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Version (exactly value and coresponding folder depends of system version, update status) see image in post 30,@MrWonderful had damaged all CBS subkeys (including also Version subkey) his whole CBS key I showed in post 41,no chance to reconstruct, your problem was only missing those folder which Version subkey describe.
Neverless really error 80080005 relate to corrupted Version key or folder which this key point

Hope you won't mind me bringing this thread to the top.

I have a similar problem - Windows Update won't work etc. It's been like that for a year. I've scoured the internet and seen /tried all sorts of possible solutions but none of them work. I don't have an installation disc otherwise I'd try a repair.

All of the observations in this thread and Mr Wonderful's thread also apply to my computer - SFC/scannow won't work, etc. Windows update error is 80080005. I've checked permissions for TrustedInstaller etc.

One observer suggested that Avast Antivirus is the culprit - mistakenly moving an operating file to the chest. I looked there and can see several system32 files including three versions of kernel32.dll. One of these was moved to the chest in November 2009 and coincides with when my updates stopped working.

Unlike many people I've enjoyed using Vista and haven't had any problems except this one. I'd really like to get it fixed. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the Vista Forums!

Can I please ask you to create a new thread? This issue will probably turn quite large, and a new thread will help us enormously. Could I also ask you to produce two logs.

I think you know what to do:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/181765-elevated-command-prompt.html

REG EXPORT "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing" C:\log.txt

Download and run this tool: Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 When it has finished installing the update, it is done!

Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS, and copy CheckSUR.log to your Desktop. Then upload it to your new thread also.

Thanks!

Richard
