Administrator Account

How to Enable or Disable the Real Built-in Administrator Account in Vista

information   Information
In Vista, even though you are using an administrator account, you still run with Standard account privileges. When a program or a action by you tries to run with administrators rights, you must first give it permission before it is allowed. This is the User Account Control (UAC). The hidden real Built-in Administrator Account does not use UAC and is like the one in XP with full rights on your computer. For more information, see: Microsoft Help and Support: KB942956
warning   Warning
If you enable the hidden Built-in Administrator Account, it is recommended that you do not use this account all the time since everything installed and running on your computer will also have full access to computer too. Instead, I would recommmend that you use it for administrative purposes only, and then use a Standard or normal administrator user account that is restricted for everyday tasks for better security.
Note   Note

  • This will not delete your current account. It just adds a new account named Administrator that is the real administrator account in Vista.
  • If you do not have any other administrator account on your computer, then you will automatically startup into the built-in Administrator account when you boot into Safe Mode.

Here's How:
2. To Enable the Hidden Built-In Administrator Account
A) In the elevated command prompt, type the command in bold below and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
net user administrator /active:yes
CMD_Enable.jpg

B) Go to step 7.

3. To Disable the Hidden Built-in Administrator Account
WARNING: Make sure you are not logged into the built-in Administrator account when trying to disable it. You must be logged into a normal administrator account to do this instead. It will not work if you try to disable the built-in Administrator account while you are still logged on to it.
A) In the elevated command prompt, type the command in bold below and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
net user administrator /active:no
CMD_Disable.jpg

4. You will get the message, The command completed successfully. If not, repeat the step.
NOTE: If you are still unable to enable the built-in Administrator account from here, then try this again in Safe Mode instead.
5. Close the elevated command prompt.
6. Log off (in Start Menu) and you will see your new built-in Administrator account next to your current account(s).
LogOff.jpg

7. Click on the new Administrator account display picture icon and log on to it.
8. You should create a password for this account for better security.
9. You will then need to set up it's desktop preferences like any other account.
That's it,
Shawn

Benzo,

I'm sorry that it took a reinstall to fix your problem, but glad that it is fixed now and that you had fun learning doing it.

Can anyone help me on my Administrator Account problem??? Here how it goes.... First, I set up my Administrator Account ACTIVE then, I decided to do another Account as Standard Account and turn off the Administrator but I accidentally delete it the Administrator Account.. Now I cannot access my Administrator Account coz it wont appear anymore. Then, I cannot even open the Account under COntrol Panel coz the system wont allow me coz in my Administrator Account I activate both Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. Without the Administrator I cannot click "OK" whenever it appears maybe coz it needed an approval from the Administrator. Currently, I can used my system on minimal functions. Please tell me what to do? Tnxs!!!

Hi Mike,

Since you do not have a administrator account anymore, you may be able to boot into Safe Mode with the built-in Administrator account already logged on to it. From within Safe Mode, see if you can create a new administrator account again to use. This tutorial will show you how to boot into Safe Mode if needed.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Robert,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Sorry, but the only way to change a user name for the C:\Users\user name folder is to create a new user account and delete the old one. :(

You cannot change the one for the built-in Administrator account though.

Hi Brink,
What think you of Start > type LUsrMgr.msc > click on same under the "Programs" list > Click on Users in the console tree panel > rtclk on the Administrator account > Properties > enable/disable account as desired.

Can also change password, add/delete user accounts here.
Karl

Hi Karl,

Yes, that's another good alternative. However, LUsrMgr.msc is not available in the Vista Home Basic and Home Premium editions. :(

Hi Shawn
thought I remembered lusrmgr.msc being there, at least as a part of compmgmt.msc (rtclk on Computer > Manage) on the Premium version. I've never had the home basic version.
karl

My Computer

Yeah, it's listed in Computer Management, but attempting to run lusrmgr.msc will simply open MMC with a message that you can't open the snap-in since you're running Home Premium or Home Basic. :(

Makes you wonder why MS has it listed in Computer Management for those editions then.

Hi Niconicolino,

Welcome to the forum.

You will need to right click on CMD and click Run as administrator, even if you are doing this in a Administrator account.

Shawn

I can't do that. Whenever I try to do anything that requires admin permission it won't let me. If I put in the wrong password, it says that it's the incorrect password. But if I type in the right one, nothing happens. the pop up window that asks for admin password just goes away and thats it. But when I tried to do it with the cmd, instead of nothing happening it says "Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again" after I type in the right password.

Re: Administrator Account is disabled

My neighbour got a laptop with VHP32 last September - no problems with it till yesterday - when she switched on, it asked her for her password, which she has never used or even known about. I tried logging in to Safe Mode to access the Administrator Account and it doesn't appear on the login screen. So I tried logging in to the last successful startup and it still asked for a password. So I tried logging in to the Repair option and got a Window asking for the Administrator password, which, as far as I know, is supposed to be blank by default. When I clicked the OK button, I got the message "Your Account has been disabled. Please contact your System Administrator".
Is Microsoft playing a great joke on us? My neighbour just wants to swap pictures with her family, play Patience and type occasional letters to the over-50's club - what need has she for all this security?
It looks as if she's going to have to take it to a repair shop and pay £50 an hour or more to fix a problem not of her making........
Unless anybody out there can help?
???????????
David

David,

Sorry but no, the OEM Recovery DVD will only allow for a clean install of Vista. Plus, it would only work for your laptop since it is basically only a clone of your hard drive with Vista and your hardware settings on it.

If resetting the password does not help, then you can create a Recovery Disc that will allow you to do repairs from here:

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/141820-create-recovery-disc.html

You can then use it to do a System Restore at boot using a restore point dated before the problem. Method Two in this tutorial will show you how to if needed.

Shawn - I got to 'enter' on step 1, and system response was:
"The option / is unknown".

How do I get out of this? I'll just put up with the nuissance of having to ok admin rights rather than mess up my pc.

I am not very knowledgeable re this stuff, but can follow directions...just don't wade in over my head!;)

Thanks. (and where in TX are you? I'm here too!)
