Administrator Account

How to Enable or Disable the Real Built-in Administrator Account in Vista

information   Information
In Vista, even though you are using an administrator account, you still run with Standard account privileges. When a program or a action by you tries to run with administrators rights, you must first give it permission before it is allowed. This is the User Account Control (UAC). The hidden real Built-in Administrator Account does not use UAC and is like the one in XP with full rights on your computer. For more information, see: Microsoft Help and Support: KB942956
warning   Warning
If you enable the hidden Built-in Administrator Account, it is recommended that you do not use this account all the time since everything installed and running on your computer will also have full access to computer too. Instead, I would recommmend that you use it for administrative purposes only, and then use a Standard or normal administrator user account that is restricted for everyday tasks for better security.
Note   Note

  • This will not delete your current account. It just adds a new account named Administrator that is the real administrator account in Vista.
  • If you do not have any other administrator account on your computer, then you will automatically startup into the built-in Administrator account when you boot into Safe Mode.

Here's How:
2. To Enable the Hidden Built-In Administrator Account
A) In the elevated command prompt, type the command in bold below and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
net user administrator /active:yes
CMD_Enable.jpg

B) Go to step 7.

3. To Disable the Hidden Built-in Administrator Account
WARNING: Make sure you are not logged into the built-in Administrator account when trying to disable it. You must be logged into a normal administrator account to do this instead. It will not work if you try to disable the built-in Administrator account while you are still logged on to it.
A) In the elevated command prompt, type the command in bold below and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
net user administrator /active:no
CMD_Disable.jpg

4. You will get the message, The command completed successfully. If not, repeat the step.
NOTE: If you are still unable to enable the built-in Administrator account from here, then try this again in Safe Mode instead.
5. Close the elevated command prompt.
6. Log off (in Start Menu) and you will see your new built-in Administrator account next to your current account(s).
LogOff.jpg

7. Click on the new Administrator account display picture icon and log on to it.
8. You should create a password for this account for better security.
9. You will then need to set up it's desktop preferences like any other account.
That's it,
Shawn

Your welcome cp-mbaby,

Oh wow, those were the days. I started on the old Tandy TRS 80 and Commodore computers. Things were just so much simpler then, but slow. LOL

I can't get past #3. When I click "Run as administrator" it still asks me for a password, which it won't accept. I have started in both Safe Mode and regular mode and encountered the same thing. It's makin me crazy!!

My Computer

Hi STTrammell,

The password will be the same as the one you use to logon to your normal administator account, but it would be best to do this from within your normal administrator account and not a Standard account. Check to make sure that you are entering correctly, and that the Caps Lock key is not on while doing so. If this does not help, then this tutorial will show you a few methods on how to reset the password so that you can do this. You can choose the Method that best fits your situtation.

Hope this helps,

Hi Guys!!!

Can anyone help me on my Administrator Account problem??? Here how it goes.... First, I set up my Administrator Account ACTIVE then, I decided to do another Account as Standard Account and turn off the Administrator but I accidentally delete it the Administrator Account.. Now I cannot access my Administrator Account coz it wont appear anymore. Then, I cannot even open the Account under COntrol Panel coz the system wont allow me coz in my Administrator Account I activate both Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. Without the Administrator I cannot click "OK" whenever it appears maybe coz it needed an approval from the Administrator. Currently, I can used my system on minimal functions. Please tell me what to do? Tnxs!!!

Hi Jaquar,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Yeah , it sounds like you deleted or disabled all of your user accounts leaving you with nothing.

See if doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before you did this can restore your computer for you. You will need to use Method Two in this tutorial to do it since you have no use account to logon to.

Hope this helps,

Hi, my problems started last week when I let someone on my computer(never again!) which runs vista home premium 32bit, and he managed to foul up my administrative privileges. He created an administrator account for himself, which he gave me access to as well as my own admin account. I am blocked from accessing my hard drives, and the system denies access to important programs like system restore and UAC control!

When I try to run CMD as administrator an error message comes up - 'incorrect parameter.' I can run cmd normally, but of course you get a system 5 error if you try to active the built in admin account.

I tried taking ownership of system restore the changes by typing

TAKEOWN/F C:\Windows\System32\rstrui.exe

The response is ERROR: Access is denied

I tried adding the /A at the end and the reply was:

The current logged on user does not have administrative privileges

Any help will be much appreciated, especially as even regedit does not open (parameter is incorrect)

My Computer

Hi Benzo,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Are you able to do all of this from the administrator account he created?

The UAC password may now be the one for the administrator account he created.

If it works from his account, then you might create a new administrator account for yourself while logged onto his account to see if it will work for you. If so, delete the other accounts while logged onto this new account you just created.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Well, I've just managed to gain access to the built in administrator account by using Safe mode, and am still able to do nothing with it!

The trouble with knowing which password controls the UAC is that I can never get to the stage where I am prompted for one, as 'run as administrator' returns an error message. My friend gave me his password, and I got into his user account and removed it. I have tried all the same actions I have tried so far from his user account, and still nothing!

I also keep getting this error message 0x80070005

My Computer

Benzo,

I would ask your friend if he remembered what he may have changed. It sounds like he may have changed the permission level for the administrator accounts. While you are in Safe Mode using the built-in Administrator account, take ownership of the c:\ drive. Afterwards make sure that the Administrators group has Full control checked under Allow. See Method Two here:

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Benzo,

Who is the owner of your C:\ partition ? It should be trustedinstaller, so if your "friend" changed the ownership of everything in C:\ you won't be able to run what so ever.
If trustedinstaller is not the owner, try to manage as follows (safe mode).

Right mouse button click on the file and choose Properties
Click Security tab
Click Advanced button
Click Owner tab
Click Edit button
Click Other User or Group and type in NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller
Press Ok on all dialogs until all property dialogs are closed

Hi everyone.

I was able to see this forum coz of my problem regarding user accounts in Vista Home Premium 32bit. I forgot my password(Administrator Account) and now I'm using a standard user account. I tried the "Safe Mode" solution but the default administrator account is not visible. Help me please.

Hi Sakura,

Welcome to Vista x64 Forums.

You will probably need to do Method Three in the tutorial below. If you are locked out of your computer, then you will need to make the boot DVD from Method Three on another computer so you can use it on your computer.

Reset User Account Password

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Is it possible something vital has been deleted?
