Windows Movie Maker and .dvr-ms

Been running Home Premium 32bit ever since it came out, and for the first couple of months I've used Windows Movie Maker to edit the commercials out of the shows and movies I recorded through Media Center (specifically these are .dvr-ms files) without any problems. After a while, I started getting a green screen flashing during the playback on Movie Maker. Some video was visible, but obstructed by a green screen flashing throughout. Audio was uneffected. Recently I updated my drivers in hopes of making it go away, and now the green screen completely covers the playback screen in MM. I have about 7 to 800 gigabytes worth of dvr-ms files that need to be trimmed down, but this makes it all but impossible. I should also mention that once the file is published, the green screen is completely gone and it plays just as well a .wmv would be expected to play. Before I do something drastic like blindly install codec packs or - *gulp* - pay $60 for Windows support (since they conveniently can't locate my product key), can anyone help me remedy this? And it's not a copyright problem, since the episodes I've tried out have no copyright, whereas most of the movies do. Personally I think it's an anti-pirating measure, but I defer to the infinite wisdom of the Interwebz.

We could use some infro abt your system. video card, ram, cpu etc. Could you go into event viewer (type event viewer in search) go to the app tab and look for errors relating to WMP

Okay, I have an Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 running at 1.6GHz, 3GB of RAM, Vista Home Premium version 6.0.6002 SP2, nVidia GeForce Go 7600 videocard, and the laptop itself is an HP Pavilion dv9235nr. Also I found out how to see what video codecs are installed, would you like those as well? And where do I find events concerning Media Player? I can't find anything but Media Center, and there's nothing there but notifications that recordings started and stopped as scheduled.
