My benchmarking marathon last week seemed to generate more questions and requests for further benchmarking. A popular request from you, Constant Reader, was to see Windows Vista 32-bit benchmarked against Windows Vista 64-bit. You asked, I delivered. Enjoy! Austin Wilson has been working with the product team on UAC well before it was even created in Windows Vista and gives us some insight into why it is the way it is. He clears up what UAC really is and speaks about the parental control capabilities with UAC. Some hard questions are answered like why should a consumer or an IT Pro even bother to run UAC and if we're doing anything about the number of prompts people get. Additionally, he shows us how and why an IT Pro can still use UAC and not get prompted as well as giving us insight into what are plans for UAC are in the future. Modern Windows versions allow you to set up multiple users with differentiated rights, ranging from administrators to regular users. For various reasons, ranging from default installation settings over the requirements of carelessly written software to laziness, most Windows users are using an user account with administrator privileges in their daily work. Windows also allows you to run each application with the privileges of a chosen user account. So, while we grudgingly accepted that we won't change people to use restricted user accounts in their daily work, we've decided to pursue a compromise: determine which applications are endangered the most, and allow the user to run those with restricted rights only. Now, since comfort is...

I thought I would spend a minute giving you an update on where we are. First, yes, we are working on a new version of Windows. As you likely know, it's called Windows 7.We are always looking for new ways to deliver great experiences for our customers. This is especially true of Windows - where we're constantly examining trends in hardware, software and services to ensure that we continue to drive the innovation that has both made Windows the world's most popular operating system and has provided a...
Software giant Microsoft has dropped its three-month-old bid to buy internet firm Yahoo because the two sides cannot agree on an acceptable sale price. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer formally withdrew the offer in a letter to Yahoo chief executive Jerry Yang. Mr Ballmer said Microsoft had raised its original offer from $44.6bn to $47.5bn (£24.1bn) - $33 per share. But he added that Yahoo had insisted on at least $53bn, or $37 a share - more than Microsoft was prepared to pay. The software giant had wanted to do a deal to be able to compete with Google, which dominates the lucrative market for internet advertising. This market was worth $40bn in 2007 and is predicted to double to $80bn by 2010. 'Distraction' In...
February 27th, 2008 KB940510 highlights some counterfeit Windows installations Yesterday Microsoft released a new update for Windows Vista via Windows Update - KB940510.
