On April 28th, we announced that Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (Service Pack 2) SP2 had RTM’d. Today, we are pleased to announce the Release to Web (RTW) for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2, a combined service pack for both operating systems encapsulated in a single installer, will simplify deployment, management, and support for IT Professionals. It includes support for new types of hardware and emerging hardware standards, as well as updates since SP1. For specific information on what’s included in SP2, visit the notable changes document.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 is now available for download on the Microsoft Download Center and on Windows Update.

Download 32-bit Vista SP2: Microsoft Update Catalog

Download 64-bit Vista SP2: Microsoft Update Catalog

Consumers with Windows Vista SP1 can visit the Microsoft Download Center or use Windows Update (WU) to install SP2, but my suggestion is to turn on Automatic Update (AU) and sometime during the coming months your computer will download and install SP2. Similar to previous releases, SP2 delivery over Automatic Update is a “throttled release” which will begin in June.

Business customers who require additional time to prepare for the download and deployment of SP2 can use the same blocker tool kit provided for Windows Vista SP1 to delay deployment.

Business customers with Windows Vista will find the transition to Windows 7 will be significantly more straightforward due to the high degree of compatibility between Windows Vista and Windows 7. For more on Windows deployment guidance, I suggest reading this blog post from Gavriella Schuster.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 represents Microsoft’s continued commitment to quality. While most updates contained in SP2 are available as individual downloads, the roll-up convenience of SP2 is a major benefit for administrators. This functionality coupled with new advanced deployment features, such as the single installer and the pre-installation analyzer, means SP2 continues to provide ongoing improvements that our customers have grown to expect from Microsoft. For more detail on SP2’s contents, see Hotfixes and Security Updates in Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Vista SP2.

Hello Kiddieboy,

Unfortunately, SP2 does not include SP1 and will require that SP1 already be installed prior to installing SP2. :)

I just upgraded to SP2 and the install went very easily and quite quick. I had previously tweeked my system using tips off this site. My question is will installing SP2 have undone the tweeks?

Thanks in Advance

Hello Nixey,

It may undo some of them. You might go back and double check them to be sure.

I installed SP2 but then Fallout3 wouldn't launch so I took it off. What good is that?

It's as good as what was seen in SP2 for XP in it's own way. Note the following description seen on a 3rd party download site that sums it up as:

"Description
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (also called Vista SP2) fixes a range of bugs in Windows Vista discovered since the release of Vista Service Pack 1. The download provides enhanced security measures that will improve Vista's defences against viruses, worms and hackers, along with increased stability and, fingers crossed, an improved experience for users.

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 is a large download and can be applied to any version of Windows Vista, provided Service Pack 1 has already been installed. You can download Vista SP2, burn it to disk and use it on multiple PCs."
Download Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Vista SP2 (Full package)

You may have simply seen a bad install of the service pack and need to get another download if you ran it from the drive. Make sure things like firewalls, antivirus, and other protections are off since those can hamper updates.

I have the same question as TubbFan: I have SP1 installed, and have configured Windows Update to show me what is available so I can choose whether to download and install things or not.

I'm up to date with my Vista updates, but I have never seen SP2 appear in the list of updates. Why would that be?

Note: I also looked through the 'Hidden Updates' list and it's not there either.

Hmmm ...

Which Version of Vista SP2 Standalone to Archive ?

This Microsoft page lists several versions of the SP2 standalone:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd262148.aspx

It seems as if the "All Language SP2 Stand-Alone" DVD ISO would be the best:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5104

(Although, it probably couldn't hurt to get all of the "All Language" versions anyway)

Oh... and just in case, here's the standalones for SP1:

The old Download Center links generally don’t work anymore, but SP1 and SP2 for Windows Vista can still be found at Microsoft Update Catalog for the time being.

Hi all. I decided to install a Vista x64 Home Premium i borrowed from someone and when updating it went through the whole process very fast. My i go to System it shows SP! installed but wouldn't it have downloaded all SPs? So i'm not sure if maybe the System doesn't recognize the SP2 being installed or if it isn't indeed installed. Here are some pictures that might help. Thank you all.1.jpg2.jpg2.jpg

There is no indication of Service Pack 2 in those screenshots. Windows Update is known to have been temporarily working around September 27 when your updates were installed - but generally speaking, WU has been kaput for about 3 months now.
