Default File Type Associations - Restore

Restore Default Vista File Extension Type Associations

information   Information
This will allow you to restore the default registry entries and program associations for the Vista file extension type of your choice.

Note   Note
This can be helpful for example when a file extension type opens with the wrong program by default, has the wrong icon, or is missing or corrupted in the registry. Downloading the .reg file for the selected file extension in the tutorial below, will restore that file extension back to default for all of these items above.

If the file extension type you need to restore is not listed below yet, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to add it to the list. :)

warning   Warning
Default program associations for file extensions are a per user setting by default, so you will need to be logged on to the effected user account to be able to restore the default associations of the file extension for that specific user account.

If you are logged in as a standard user and this still does not help, then have the administrator also merge the needed .reg for the file extension below while logged into their administrator account.

These default file extensions should only be used in Vista.

Here's How:

1. Click on the file extension type link listed below for the one that you wish to restore to default to download it's .zip file.

2. Save the .zip file to your desktop.

3. Open the downloaded .zip file, then extract the .reg file to the desktop.

4. Right click on the extracted .reg file and click on Merge.
Tip   Tip
If you do not see a Merge option when you right click on the REG file, then you will need to check in Default Programs to set the reg file extension to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

5. If prompted, click on Run, Continue (UAC), Yes, and OK.
NOTE: If you are logged in a standard user account, then you will get a Cannot import type error. Just click on OK for it. This is normal since what cannot be imported can only be done so by an administrator account instead. It will still restore the default association of the file extension though.

6. When done, you can delete the downloaded .zip and .reg files on the desktop if you like.

7. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to fully apply.

My Computer

Does this also fix the jpg thumbnail because I was trying to solve another problem I backed up the reg file but accidently deleted it (Stupid I know) This reg file before deleted displayed thumbnail images.

Gif files show up fine but jpg just show icons here is what I mean:
http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww207/Soulfinger95/Thumbnail.jpg

if the above file will rectify my problem then Great!

I tried the above jpg Default but get the error

not all data was successfully written to the registry.
Some keys are open by the system or other processes.

Tried applying it in Safe mode as well - No joy!

If this will not rectify my problem then any help would be great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance

Hello Soulfinger,

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that Windows Photo Gallery is set as the default program with all of it's associations set to it. :)

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello Brink,

Thanks for your response. I have set the jpg to open with the default program but that doesn’t help.

I don’t have that set as Default viewer because when I installed Microsoft Enterprise it came with a viewer and when I was on the web and went to save image within that box I would preview a image that was already on my computer I would get the error.

"No Such Interface supported"

But when I set the default viewer to Microsoft Picture manager I was able to preview images. This was the problem I had before that led to this one.

I compromised in using the Microsoft Viewer.

In other words it doesn’t matter what is used to open the jpg it is definitely a Registry problem.
I think to solve the problem is to find out what the Default registry settings is for showing the jpg thumbnails
appreciate the help Shawn

Soulfinger,

Try this reg file below to see if it may help restore it for you.

If not, then you might see if doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before you had this problem may be able to if it was not to far back.

Thanks Shawn, I tried that and now the gif files dont show up now lol

I dont have a restore point before the alterations were made.

There must be a registry fix or just Default settings from a untouched Vista registry
(First installed)

Ive got SP2 if that makes it any different

Another thing the thumbnails flash the image for a split second then go to the icons

maybe something to do with:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg

I have also tried this:
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=182981

But its further into the registry

Appreciate the help.

The Reg file should work? Not trying to be insulting! But Are you sure that this is all the entries for jpg remember there are 32 bit & 64 bit registries.

Ok I’ll start from the beginning I’ll try to keep it short & Sweet?
There was a windows update for Word Enterprise (SP2) & couldn’t install it

Only way was to manually uninstall Word Which was removing Registry entries and deleting files (I Was very careful)

Managed to install the new word I got which was the new black one (very sleek)

I’m a graphic illustrator so this means looking for images on the web for ideas
So when I would save an image into a folder with many and it would say this file already exists I would preview the image I had (right click & Preview)

Then the fun began? I got the error “no such interface supported”
The preview worked with IE but not Firefox (my preferred browser)

I ended up just using the Microsoft Image viewer (no great loss)

The default was of course Windows Photo Gallery.

Then I notices that some jpg files showed thumbnails’ but some jpg didn’t.

It defiantly lies with the registry as I remember the file I deleted related to 32 & 64 bit of the registry.

Is it possible to get a registry file that sets ALL vista default everything but still keeping all the programs on my machine because to be honest I really don’t have time to format and start from scratch?

I appreciate the help I’ll just keep finding the time to sort this because I know there is a solution as I have never had to formatI always find a solution.

Can I not restore the registry from the Windows disk?

Could this help me in anyway?
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/121970-re-issue-viewing-jpg-thumbnails-network-drive.html

I also installed Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection

Soulfinger,

Can I not restore the registry from the Windows disk?

Sorry, but you will not be able to repair the registry with just the Vista installation Disk, only through a System Restore, or reg file as manual registry back up instead. :(

That would only be helpful if you are having problems viewing thumbnails from a network drive.

I'm afraid that I do not know what else to offer, something got deleted in there somewhere. I only see a clean reinstall as an option for now. :(

LOL, I hear you. Usually unless you have a full drive image, which wouldn't work for this, you would need to reinstall the programs since they install all over the drive. :(

Alrighty Shawn, Just thought I would reply to let you know everything is back to normal (Thankfully)
Just a tip if you’re installing from scratch on a SP2 vista. Allot of drivers can only be installed in safe mode I spent about 2 hours before I went into safe mode and all was good.
Anyway just wanted to thank you again for the help
Take care
