Hi,

Going back to the registry question, does the registry get very messy because of installing and uninstalling programs? Will this affect anything?

The registry gets full of things like programmes you've uninstalled, licence keys for programmes youv no longer got installed, etc.

I use Tune Up to clean away trash files and clean the registry. Its reg cleaner is very lite compared to others, meaning itl miss a few entries to delete. But id rather that than have it delete files i need like ccleaner etc. It can also defrag the registry.

Ok, do you think in time the pc will become unseable if the registry is not cleaned? Do you notice any difference when cleaning the registry and defragging it?

There's actually no difference in performance even if you keep the registry as is. Infact, as i told in my earlier post, running registry cleaners is not at all a good idea. Simply let the registry work on its own. When you install a software, it creates its entry in the registry and the same way, when you remove that software, its removed from registry as well. No matter you can still see some registry keys of the software which is longer present in your system, it doesn't mean that your registry is bloating. My recommendations for everyone would remain the same, never use registry cleaners.

No the computer will still be useable even if you dont clean and defrag it.

Think of it like using the diskcleanup and defrag utilities of vista. You dont have to use them for your pc to work you could go a year without defragging and your pc will still work.

I just clean the system of junk files, uneeded registry entries and then defrag the registry then the boot files then the rest of the hard drive as i beleive my pc runs faster when iv done that.

When it comes to tweaking my computer for speed, i simply do rest of the stuffs to make vista more faster. But in registry, all i do is reduce waitokill value. Thats it.

If you dont want to clean the registry, then click the link in my sig and under STEP 3 download the utilities.zip. This includes shortcuts for defragging your boot files etc.

Dont rely on the standard vista cleanup and defrag, at the very least use the advanced shortcuts.

Stew2, I use both of these Utilities but I like CCleaner a lot better than T/U for cleaning the registry. I do not touch Windows System Files with CCleaner though. I use it often since I am always upgrading my drivers to keep up with the games and such.

Kavita, What is a "waitokill" value?

Hi astalavista, navigate to Hkey_Local Machine>System>Current Control Set and then at the right hand side you will find waittokill. Double click on it and then chnge the value to 20 and then restart your computer.
Note: The default value is 20000.
This will reduce the shutdown time to a great extent.

I think the biggest problems caused by reg cleaners are caused by the people who use them. BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE USING A REGISTRY CLEANER. imo, hehe.

If you install and un-install programs a lot you might like to use Revo-Uninstaller and it will remove most of the left over files for you. CCleaner is safe for regular use
