Wireless connection problem

I recently got a new computer that came with Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium edition, I have a DSL connection downstairs plugged into a router,I connect to the router from my room upstairs via wireless, I'm using a Linksys wusb54g wireless router which plugs into my usb port,It connects just fine with a good signal but when I'm trying to play a game (Diablo II) it constantly skips every 60 seconds (my connection to the game freezes for 10 seconds then goes back to normal) when its not skipping my game ping is very good (31 ping),it never did this on my previous computer (which was old and slow) my wireless settings (picture) :

It doesn't skip when I browse the web either.

Check the manual for Diablo 2 and see if there are any ports that need to be opened in the router.

Hi Tyler,

Every 60 seconds vista will automatically 'Poll' for new wireless networks that are in rage of your adapter. If you are playing an online game you will experience a short 3 second lag spike every 60 seconds.

Theres two programs available to halt the automatic gathering of info:

This one is the one you need
WLAN Optimizer .NET

If wlan optimizer fails you can use vista-antilag (the website is german but the program is english)

Did you reboot first?

Your Linksys software should also have an option to disable the scanning interval

I use an Ethernet <> WiFi adapter (Linksys WRT54GL running DDWRT mod firmware) this makes the computer think its plugged into a LAN port instead of managing the wifi itself since I get way better ping and causes zero problems for gaming (your wireless adapter was never designed for gaming)

It might be a bit overkill for your uses ($50US to setup a WRT54GL with ddwrt) but its better buying one of them instead because its easier to manage, setup and monitor than usb or pci adapters and works perfect for gaming

I know its not much help but its all I can suggest since neither application worked for you

The software wouldn't work on vista w/ my linksys adapter,I had to download windows xp 64 bit drivers which works fine for connecting,anyways I've done some research seems a lot of people have this problem so I'm gonna keep trying to find a solution and yes I reset my computer first sadly it didn't work.

/edit: I entered netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface=”Wireless Connection 6” in the command line and I've had no lag for about an hour, should know by tomorrow if this has 100% fixed my problem,thanks a ton for letting me know that vista checked for new connections every 60 seconds I did searched on that issue.

Hey there, I am also facing a similar problem.

Tried your method but it couldn't work. At the command prompt screen after typing

netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface="Wireless Network Connection"​

The following came out

C:\Users\James>netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface="Wireless Network
Connection"
One or more parameters for the command are not correct or missing.

Usage: set autoconfig [enabled=]yes|no [interface=]<string>

Parameters:

Tag Value
enabled - Set auto configuration logic to enabled or disabled.
interface - Name of the interface for which the setting has to be
changed.

Remarks:

Enable or disable the auto configuration logic on an interface. If it is,
disabled then Windows will not connect to any wireless network
automatically from the specified interface.

Both parameters are required.

Examples:

set autoconfig enabled=yes interface="Wireless Network Connection"​

Please advice.

Do you mean it's a network adapter that's connected to your USB port?

I had a shed load of problems when I used one of these. Internal PCI cards are a lot better.
