Windows will not turn on

I have downloaded the ImageBurn to my laptop. I assume that I should then download UBUNTU Live to the laptop then burn the CD.
I'm sorry that I'm not that computer literate. I'm trying.

Thanks for the help. I'm moving along slowly. I got ubuntu downloaded and the CD burned. I loaded the cd into the broken computer. I followed the instructions in the How To Geek column. The problem is that when I open up the "computer" screen with inubuntu, the is no hard drive listed.
The things showing are:

Generic-Compact Flash
Generic-MS/MS-Pro
Generic-SD/MMC
Gereric-SM/xD-Picture
File System

There is no Windows or other drive. If the physical hard drive is broken would that prevent it from showing up?

If you are sure that you followed the instructions carefully and it does not show the hard drive that would be a very good indication that the HD has already failed. Your stuff may already be gone.
A failed HD would also prevent Windows from booting.

I followed the directions accurately. I called Dell and they feel that the hard drive is bad. They allowed me to purchase an additional year of the warrantee, it had run out a couple of months ago. They are going to replace the hard drive.
Thanks you very much for all of your help and assistance. I hope I won't need it again.

One last question. I have most of my data from my desktop also on my laptop that runs Windows 7. When I get the new hard drive I am going to copy it back to the desktop. How do I copy my email messages from the laptop that's running Windows Live Mail to the desktop that runs on Windows Mail? I googled that question but only could find a way to transfer from Windows Mail to Live Mail, not the other way around.
Thanks

Microsoft likes people to upgrade. May I suggest that you upgrade to Windows live mail, its free.
