Windows Updates Fail / Cannot update from IE8 to IE9 / Vista Home Premium 32 bit

I thought something was wrong. I did not see a "public folder" and "copy public link" was not available. Checking the Drop box folder on Windows Explorer shows subfolders of "photos" "getting started" and the newly created "schema.dat.zip

I guess I am confused in regards to utilizing the "public folder".

Hi John,

Make sure the zip file is in the Public folder before you attempt to copy the link. When you have done this, the 'Copy public link' should be available.

The SURT failed to install and didn't write a log at all, so we can't see what caused it to fail just yet :( As far as I know, it doesn't scan the schema registry hive either so I don't think it would be able to fix this, even if it did install.

"Please note: New Dropbox accounts created after October 4, 2012 no longer have a Public folder. Don't worry! Every account created prior to this date will still have a Public folder. If you would like to enable a Public folder on a new account, see the instructions below (Creating a Public folder).
However, all the extra functionality provided by the Public folder is now accessible anywhere in your Dropbox. Now all you need to do to share and preview files and folders in your Dropbox is select Share link via your computers, phones, and tablets. Take a look at Dropbox links here or go to this article to see how it works."

Hi John,

Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't aware that Dropbox had changed the Public folder functionality because my account was made before this change was made.

If you right click on the zip file, click Dropbox > Share link, you should be able to paste the link here.

Again I attempted to install IE9. I downloaded the Vista 32 bit update to my desktop and ran it from there. After just over half way complete, receive message "not able to complete". Something like that. Download ran for about 2 minutes before stopping.

I could uninstall IE8 first, but would hate to lose bookmarks, history, log-in cookies, etc.

I am guessing that my "update" issue with IE9 may be due to my inability to download and run approx 17 "Windows updates".

The prerequisites to loading IE9 are;

#1. Service pack 2 ... [X]
#2. Windows Graphics Imaging XPS KB971512 ... [ ] tried to run both x64 and x86 and received "update does not apply to your system"
#3. Platform update supplement KB2117917 ( install 971512 first ) ... [ ] tried to run both x64 and x86 and received "update does not apply to your system".

I have run the IE9 install troubleshooter before. But this prerequisite information may be useful. Although I am currently at square one.

My Computer

The download issue is why I suggested trying the System Update Readiness Tool and to install Windows Installer 4 (which was an error, I should have said 4.5). However, if you can't download these, then you'll have to resort to other means.

for example, you might try running Firefox to do the downloads. Or, you might download them using another computer and transfer them to your computer.

The download issue might be due to low hard drive space or perhaps an anti-virus firewall.

All good points. I like the alternate browser for downloading or transfer update files. I believe I am only using Windows defender/firewall at this point. Have plenty of HD space. As I understand it, the referenced updates were prerequisites for installing SP2 and they were rolled into another update.

I can't tell what you've done. Were you able to download and run the System update readiness tool? How about installing WI 4.5.

Some anti-virus programs like Commode and Norton 360 have their own firewalls.

Just to avoid any confusion, the WI I was referring to is Windows Installer as I mentioned in another post.

What was the result of running the readiness tool?

I have run the readiness tool before. No luck installing updates or IE9. I am, from time to time, able to download select few updates though. But those may be newer ones. I am still sitting on about 17 updates that will not take.

I went to CNET and attempted to download the Windows Installer 4.5 for Vista. I received the same message I got when attempting to download kb971512 and kb2117917 ... "update does not apply to your system".

I assume that you picked the redistributable for 32 bit since I think you have a 32 bit system.

However, according to Microsoft, if you have SP2 installed, you don't need to install Windows Installer 4.5.

Go to Windows, Accessories and find Command Prompt. Right click on it and select Run as Administrator. Type in
SFC /Scannow and run it. Does it find any problems?

I have run SFC before. Ran it again and recieved "found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them". Earlier I had created a CBS.log zip file to share. Here is my previous message ...

"HP Pavillion a610a Vista Home Premium 32 bit Intel Core (TM)2 CPU

6 to 9 months ago I found I could not download and run most Windows updates
At one point I did upgrade to IE9 but I returned to IE8
Now my main motivation is to once again upgrade to IE9 which I cannot do. The download stops about halfway thru process.

When the situation is at it's worst, I attempt to download updates and receive codes such as 643 and 8007371c. Some succeed and some do not. When I reboot, the "successful" updates are attempted, then stopped and backed out. The reboot procees will "cycle". I have to use HP rescue "F11" and system restore.

I have tried every suggestion. Some processes I was unable to preform ( for example: command prompt .. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth ( "not recognized" ).

Here is what I have tried ...

Command Prompt ... net stop wuauserv net stop bits net stop cryptsvc ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old ( I was not able to copy the text provided and save as WindowsUpdate.BAT )

CHECKDISK, SFC SCAN AND ChEKSUR

Rename the Pending.xml file ( "cannot find" )

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder

System Update Readiness Tool

FIXIT

Delete incorrect Registry values ... PendingXml Identifier / NextQueueEntryIndex / AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

Register the Windows Update Files

I will check, but I believe I am only using Windows Vista security measures. If I have added, active protection, I need to see that certain files are not scanned. In the directory %windir% \SoftwareDistribution. Exclude Edb*.log Res1.log Res2.log Edb.chk Tmp.edb

Clear the BITS queue of any current jobs

Download and manually install the 958056 update

Clean BOOT and attempt update

I currently have 17 updates that will not take including my attempt to download IE9

Cummulative security IE8 (2)
Security update Net framework (3)
Update for Vista (8)
Update XML Core (3)
Video card driver update (1)

Thank you for your assistance!

RichC46 always recommends running the SFC /Scannow three times. Since it found corrupt files, you should run it again.

I find that the .net framework updates (particularly one) gives me the most problems. As a result, I install other available updates first, in small batches and then attempt the .net framework updates.

I spoke with Microsoft and was left with 3 thoughts ...

#1. Double-check to make sure I am not running a 3rd party virus protection/firewall utility program.
#2. Clean boot computer and attempt to gain an Internet connection while in "clean boot" mode. Attempt Windows Update.
#3. Run Vista install disk "repair". I bought computer from big box store and may only have a CD labeled "Vista 32 bit recovery disk".
I am not sure I can run "repair" with this disk. Need to make sure I am not making a BIG mistake by loading the "recovery disk".

Hi John, welcome to VistaForums!

Sorry for the delay, it's been a busy week for me.

Let's see what's up here:

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

I think we covered the first two things.

Did you rerun the SFC scan, as I suggested?

I don't see any reason why you can't run the recovery disk if it's the one that came with your system.
