I downloaded what I presume is the latest version of SFCFix earlier today. I had deleted the previous copy first. The result was what I wrote in my previous post. Is there any hope left?
Could you delete any copy you have and repeat my instructions here please? SFCFix was last updated a few hours ago to fix that side by side error you experienced so I think you have the wrong version
Thanks for the quick response. The SFCFix.exe program did indeed work this time resulting in the following:

Regarding the second part of your instructions – the SFC Scan – once again the verification phase of the system scan reached 71% completion, but then stopped with
“Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.”
Let's drop SFCFix for now and go ahead with a manual fix.
Please download the attached file, packs.zip, and extract this to the root folder of your primary drive (usually C:\) so that the folders have the structure: C:\Packs\Windows... etc.
You will now need to boot into your Windows 7 DVD. After selecting the language, click Repair Computer then click Command Prompt. In this Command Prompt window, type out the following command, double checking it for typos before pressing enter:
robocopy C:\Packs C:\ /E /IS
Then reboot your computer, run another SFC and post the CBS log please.
I did everything as directed, but the verification phase of the system scan once again stopped at 71% completion with
“Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.”
At this point I’m inclined to bag Vista altogether and switch to Windows 7. There are other issues as well contributing to this decision. I want to thank you for all your help and commend you for your timely replies. Hopefully Win7 will be smoother sailing!
You're most welcome for the help, it was a pleasure working with you.
Hopefully Windows 7 will bring less problems for you! I've been running it without a hitch (had a couple of unrelated BSODs though) for a few years now and love it.
