windows update error 80070490 and "loop"

Just one question: the article says: " Repairing Windows won't damage your personal files or the programs that are installed on your computer."

Can i be sure of that, or do you guys advice to backup my data first? Do repair installs normally go well?

There is always a chance an error could occur , I myself, would save anything i was concerned about .
