Windows must format disk drive x before you can use it

It's my new Sony ebook reader. It works fine on my old XP pc but not my Vista Home Premium laptop. I don't know how reformatting an actual reader would affect the device since every one at the Sony forum has only reformat their memory from the actual reader that has a reformat memory, you lose your books but all the Sony applications that runs the reader are still intact. Since I got this error, I've reformatted via the actual reader and still every time I plug my reader in my USB port, I get this error. I'm scared if I say yes that all the applications that makes the reader works will be wiped out. Here is the thread in the Sony Reader Forum of them trying to help me. Please help. If I can't plug my reader to my computer then I can't load the books.

can't you just save the books on your xp and reformat you ebook reader and then put it back on?

There's a reformat on the Sony and I have reformat and to no avail. I have the books backed up, so I don't know if I hit the button via the laptop will the applications that makes the reader works will be wiped up. I'm not worried about the books, just the Sony applications.

"Windows must format disk drive x before you can use it" is a Microsoft Vista problem not a Sony reader problem. When I checked on the net, there were hundreds of inquiries of people having that problem that plugged a USB device in their USB port with Vista operating system (Cameras, USB storage device, etc).

So is that what you did in the last response on that forum, Unplug it before dismounting or "Safely Remove Hardware" Option?

I always dismount correctly. I have used the reader on my XP PC and always double click on the dismount icon and use the safely remove hardware before I pull any USB device.

O.K. I was just wondering because that was the last response.

edit: I just checked and the last response was to plug it in before you turn on the laptop. Have you tried this yet?
