Windows Mail won't shut down

Whenever I try to close out Windows mail and then open it up sometime later I receive a message that windows mail is already running and cannot be restarted. I then have to go to the task manager, close down the instance of it running. After that I can restart mail again. I read in another post over a year old that anti-virus can wreak havoc with mail, but the suggestion was to use AVG to avoid issues. I currently run AVG, so I'm not sure where to go next. Any help? Thanks.
