Windows Defender

I'm having problems keeping Windows Defender turned on. I have auto scanning enabled. I have all the boxes ticked on Real Time Protection Options and both boxes ticked on Administrator Options. I can click on the icon and it will come up, even reboot and it's still on, then the next time I check it I get the "Windows Defender is not on" message. How do I keep it on?

Hello Fred.

It may be a good idea to download and install the free version of MBAM from the link below then let it run a full scan to see if it comes up with anything; please post back to keep us informed.

If you are using Microsoft security essentials, defender will not work. Its function has been taken over by MSE.

Not using MSE. My PC has Windows Security Center installed. Got up this AM and clicked on the Defender icon and it says "Windows Defender is turned off". I just ran a Malwarebytes scan and it came up clean. I just recently installed AVG and I'm wondering if it's interfering in some way. My ISP is Comcast. They were providing McAfee but switched to Norton and I have had very bad experience with Norton and did not want to go there. 2 friends who are computer techs both recommended AVG.

I, and many other members suggest MSE, it is free and works like a charm.

Try turning off your anti virus and see if Defender works properly.

Howdy.

I've been using Avast for a long time and I'm very pleased with it, give it a try, it can be downloaded at the link below.

You must register this program even though it's free. The registration will be good for a year. After that, you must re-register. It is still completely free though.

I just read up on MSE and also some positive reviews. As I understand it, this is a complete security suite (antivirus, antimalware, antispyware etc.). Can I just uninstall the AVG and download MSE and that's all I'll need? I have Malwarebytes, Super Antispyware, Windows Software Removal Tool, etc. Should I just dump the AVG and download the MSE? It is an antivirus right?

MSE does all it is purported to do and does it well. However, you can, and should, use malwarebytes running it about once every 14 days. You will not be disappointed with MSE, only surprised at how well it does, how small the footprint is and how little amount of resources it takes.

Very easy download and install. It seems very unobtrusive and transparent. One question....under settings what should I set the recommended to for each of the levels (Severe, High, Medium and Low). My guess would be to set it to remove the severe and high. Suggestions anyone??

Start with High, If too restrictive drop a level. MSE or any other A/V is not your true protection; you are. We all know what is safe and what is not, stay away from those exctiing sites that we all like to visit, use common sense, you will be OK.

Use MSE in conjuction with a good fire wall and Malwarebytes combined with common sense and you, like me, will not have a problem. In my years of surfing (starting with Windows 98), I have received only 3 warinings of a problem and each one was due to use with Yahoo Messenger. Go out there and enjoy.

Thanks to all! I dumped AVG and installed MSE. It was a very easy download and install and the app is running very smoothly and is very transparent. Should I configure the settings now, or wait until the app uncovers some malware? IOW, should I go ahead and set Severe and High alert to "remove" or wait? Thanks again to all who helped.

I see no reason to wait, set it now. You can always change the setting if you are not happy. I may have not explained correctly in my last post. Set it to remove high. If too restrictive change it. Eveyone is different and has different needs.

That should be fine. If your individual needs are not satisfied, adjust later.
Everyone is different, use the system, if you feel that you are too restricted adjust it.
If you feel that you are allowed to go to sites that make you uncomfortable, again, adjust it.

If you have installed a antivirus/malware protection program Windows defender will turn it self off automatically it is natural lol don't worry
