Windows Defender

After the vista update last night Defender has appeared in the notification area of my toolbar with a yellow triangle and an exclamation point. when I click on it to resolve what ever the issue is it tells me that defender needs to be updated, also in checking the Security center, if also indicates that defender is out of date. when I try to as it to update or look for an update I am told that it is up to date however nothing changes. I still have the defender notification on my tool bar, and the security center still tells me that it is out of date.

any ideas how to deal with this?

I also have the same issue with Windows Defender, for the first time starting yesterday defender has an exclamation mark asking to check for updates. Upon checking for updates , no new updates found. Also after running a scan and rebooting, Windows Defender is still on the task bar with the exclamation mark again asking to be updated. This seems to be some sort of problem as it has never done this before.

All three of you with issues need to go to the windows Defender site and download a manual update - that should fix it up.

Hi all,

First time to this site and I enjoy it throughly.

I had a similar problem with windows 98 and Norton Antivirus. The solution, in that case was very simple. I had to correct the date and time that shows in the lower lright corner of the computer monitor.

I am having similar probs with Defender showing that updates are required. However in my case there is an error code 0x80244019. This appears to be a virus/trojan (don't worry - I am using my laptop at present and it is all clear!) and whenever I try to update it will not let me contact the website (This is for all M/S updates). I use Kaspersky Internet Security and originally I was prevented from getting their updates but they advised me how to get around that and it is now back up to date. Despite having scanned the PC with Kaspersky, Spybot S&D and Adaware it appears to be firmly esconced in my machine. I am currently running a full scan with the latest version of M/S Malacious Software Tool - downloaded via the laptop to a memory stick then plugged into the PC - this being the only way that I could access it. It has been running for well over 1 hour and still has a long way to go. When the scan is complete I will come back and report the outcome. Meanwhile I would appreciate any suggestions in case the scan does not do the trick.

You might also try Malwarebytes. And if you wanted to, you could temp. disable Kaspersky and try Avast Home. You can run a boot time scan with it. It's free and works well. And if you can find the virus and the name of it, please post it as we might be able to suggest further action.

Scanned with M/S mal software tool (took best part of 24 hours!) Nothing came up. Have been playing around with PC to see what happens. Tried to install "One Care" to see if this would produce anything. Two things of note. Something is informing me that mt PC is infected and trying to force me to download a program called "Wingard" (or similar - I close it down before it can get a hold) and I am getting another error message telling me that "c:\windows\system32\drivers\fidbox.dat is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chkdsk utility" - This is in ref to the OC setup.

I wiil leave it at that for now while I try to intall Malwarebytes.

Yes, it sounds like you have something like Vundo/virtumonde variant or that itself. There is an earlier thread that SIW2 suggests an iso file rescue disk from Kaspersky. You can read this thread and follow his suggestion as well.

Try running this as well to see if you have vundo, though Malwarebytes should pick up something.

The MSRT shouldn't have taken 24 hours  Do you have a terabyte HDD or something?

I also have problems with Defender. If you have a wellknown antivirus program you can inactivate Defender and activate it once a week if you want to scan your computer. Dont forget to Win Update before you scan just to have the latest update .My antivirus program is F-secure and I have run my computer a couple of months in this way and the stability of the computer have increase to 9,5

Have now scanned with VundoFix. It tells me my PC is fine yet I still cannot contact MS for any updates and if I try to contact any security suppliers website I am blocked from doing so. The bogus AV tried to download again this am and before I stopped it I saw that it was called WINIGARD.

I am now going to download AVAST etc and try them. Unfortunately I am going to be away for 3 days or so from to-night so I will report back at the weekend.

Meanwhile thanks to all for your suggestions - any more would be welcome!

Hi All,
I am now back in circulation. Subsequent to my last post I started getting error messages indicating that I had a number of problems with corrupt files and that I should run chkdsk. Again whatever I had on my PC would not allow this. However this am I downloaded malwarebytes to a mem stick via the laptop, got it on the PC, did just a Quick Scan, picked up about 6 probs, rebooted, the PC automatically ran chkdsk on reboot and I can now download all my updates.

Obviously this is early days to breathe too big a sigh of relief but should I have further probs I will let you know. Meanwhile thanks to you all for your help and input.

I have Defender problems also. Slightly different see below:

HP PC with Windows Vista 64 bit OS Pops up window announcing "You haven't
scanned your PC in 3 Days. Recommend you schedule MS Defender to Scan
Daily". I have the following settings since (DOP) 12/20/2008 : Options:
Frequency=Daily; Time 2 AM; Type=Full Sys Scan. PC is never shut down at
night , only placed in sleep mode. What gives? Help?

Hi Hokie,

Looks like Defender has "forgotten " it has done a scan .

This may be because it's log files are being cleared.

Do you use some sort of cleaning utility, like Ccleaner ?

If so, check it's options to see if it is clearing Defender logs.

Hope it helps
