which card to go for

hope fully with in the next month iam going to get a new graphics card
i had found this bfg gtx285 and i had made my mind up to get it when it is back in stock

but i have now found a gtx295 that is only £20 more this one

iam now unsure what to do for the best

does look a nice card but the 5870 looks better iam now not sure what to do as the radeon is a directx 11

5870 5870!!!!! really the 5870 is the better card and if you have the cash two of those on cf will smoke anything out there, but even a single 5870 is faster than the 285 and just as fast as the 295 and its cheaper

looking at the specs of them they do look dam good and the price of them is around £320
BUT what price and what spec are the nvidia gt300 going to be ???

Honestly? I'd go the 285. Less niggles with SLI issues and at the resolution you are using, it would handle pretty much most games maxed out.

What if any is the diffrence between ati and nvidia graphics cards
or is it down to personal prefrences

um mostly personally preference, but with ati you get more power for the money where nvidia is more expensive..... but honestly i wouldn't get either of those nvidia cards i'd get a 5870, also as far as nvidias new card so far its been a flop and will prolly be slower than its 295.... and its price will prolly be way more than £320

I can get a nvidia gtx295 oem for £310
but i would rather spend a bit more on a future proof card

like ive said iam going to be spending about £300 so i want to get it right

that has been fixed and their software just keeps getting better now, also the 5870 is the much better card..... and if you can get two on cf you will be set for the next few years

Check out the 5850HD, that's got comparable speeds with the GTX 295. If you can afford it, go with 2 5850's in CrossFire. Also, if you can, wait till December/January for nVidia's GT300 series release.

if you want complet hassle free computing the 285 , if your not worried about working out the odd sli niggle you may come across then the 295 for raw power :D

after what ive read and seen i might now be going for the ati hd5870 as for some reason i can see the nvidia version being aroun the £400 marker

and in all the reviews ive seen the hd5870 has beeten the gtx285

exactly...... the 5870 is the best deal right now.... add a second one later and your set for years :D
and @archie..... nvidia has never had raw power just good drivers thats it..... raw power and nvidia shouldn't even be in the same sentence unless its nvidia doesn't have raw power

In that case, go for the 5870. Honestly, whatever you buy now will be superseded anyway, but the 5870 will be enough for quite some time.
