Yeah right. I did not say there is no malware - I said it is easy to avoid getting infected. All it takes is a bit of knowledge and experience. You dont get that by installing/paying for products. But ok if user is really stupid I guess that is only way. Start with WOT then, not lazy payware. Remember to educate user in proper handling of AV product and good luck with that, heh.

You forgot the big ones Ayporos, porn, warez/cracks, p2p for illegal purposes - or is that included in malicious sites? Users race to such sites :)

yes its included =)

I personally find ANY porn/warez/p2p site suspicious.

p2p such as bittorrent or usenet are usually pretty safe (because virusses get picked up fast on infected files shared there) but stuff like limewire is more susceptible to virusses/trojans.

I never get anything from warez sites simply because there aren't any good ones out there that have a nice consistent repetoire and also it is very easy to set up a 'fake' warez site.

Porn on the other hand... usually the only 'infections' you might get from porn sites are simple spam- and adware. Other than making porn ads pop up constantly they hardly ever pose a 'real' threat.
And again getting infected by a porn site would usually require its viewer to 'download and install' a certain 'viewer' to be able to view/download the porn...
(if that aint the oldest trick in the book I dont know what is)

No need for sarcasm dk70.

I disagree with your flawed logic regarding antivirus/antimalware apps, and the fact you are suggesting to naive/inexperienced Users that they can safety do anything online with their computers and avoid malware, and damage to their systems. Its fine If you want to do something considered foolhardy, but I think you are doing a disservice to all the Users who come to this forum for help, and information. Issue closed.

In my view, surfing with intelligence is a good practice and does help reduce the possibility of getting infected. However, I think at least one layer of protection is also helpful. So, no matter how knowledgable you are and surfing safe sites, the extra layer of protection is there to back you up. I use Avast. Just started and like it. I tried PC1 Care. This program seems to be for folks who really do not understand computers, ie, defrag and clean up internet clutter. PC1 Care can do this if you schedule it. PC1 is like a no brainer for those that really are not in the know when it comes to caring for your hardware. I find Avast very unobstrusive. It has visual as well as audible warnings of virus and or an update has been done. Do I expect it to catch everything? No. Norton has not either. In the 15 years of messing with computers only once did I get a trojan. Norton caught it. However, once I ran defender and found a trojan that Norton missed. So, having some layers is a good idea. Selecting the one that is not resource hungry is up to you.

Well I would not know but where people gather interest from malware makers go. So I would assume porn sites are source for many a scam - though perhaps more refined that downloading a fake codec.exe Also why Facebook and such places become interesting, Twitter with all the tinyurls is a lovely opportunity as well.

Im not being sarcastic but saying it is doing users a disservice to make them believe security is a matter of installing what whoever is pimping. Safe computing is way more powerful and of course also includes layers of protection but mainly awareness. And it has proven to work, also without AV installed. There is no doomsday.

I dont exclude the chance of the less knowledgeable to step up a notch or 2, not hard. Selling payware to them dont help and should be last resort. On the other hand making 10 mile long security guides on how to "harden" Windows is not the way either. Neither is crippling browsers - there is no reason to expect the worst. Keep it simple stupid and focus on real threats and real usage of computer - start with what not to do. "Need" for AV will become less and less because user stop seeking problems.
