What killed Vista will make Windows 7 fly

I'm one of those users who has been using Vista with no problems ever since Microsoft gave out RTM copies to beta testers. However, as a writer, I've watched the media completely destroy the public opinion of Vista, leading many to stick with Windows XP or to look for alternatives, even before they had tried Vista. Even with SP1 out, many have not bothered trying Vista on recent hardware and therefore could not realize the fact that it really is worthy of being XP's successor. If I had to lay the blame on one party for Vista's poor public opinion, I wouldn't lay it on Microsoft, I wouldn't lay it on hardware companies incapable of producing good drivers, I wouldn't lay it on the fact that XP is so good, I would lay it on the media for blowing things out of proportions.

Yes, the problem is exaggeration (it's in this article's title too, in case you missed it); bloggers and journalists alike use their personal experiences to prove their point in their writing. The blame doesn't solely lie with us, as Vista was by no means perfect, but we did manage to amplify the problems beyond reason. And if the beta is anything to go by, Windows 7 is going to fly. This is, by far, the best beta operating system the software giant has ever released. The media has locked on to this, and is using exaggeration already, before Windows 7 is even ready for prime time.

I suggest leaving the recovery partition as it is - you may need it if you want to recover Vista in the future.

yeah i did the partition so it would give me the choice of selecting vista or win 7 only thing i dont liek about it is i cant get to the quick launch or my other programs cant display the toolbar as windows classic it only shows 16 mb of video memory when i know more is there cant change the start menu to windows classic either it does seem faster though no other problems other than that if i wanted to delete it and go back to a single boot system would i do it by selecting vista n the boot menu then go back n to manage and delte the part that has windows 7 on it

On a whim I tried Windows 7 x64 beta today and I found it slower than my current Vista x64 system.....which has been optimised for Photoshop cs4. My Eizo software won't work (essential for my monitor's calibration) and PS CS4 was MORE laggy.....I'm certain this is a driver issue...but, I will hold out for the retail until MS and others get it sorted.....beta's are to be taken with a pinch of salt in my experience.... However, I'm sure the end result will be great.

I have been an XP (x86) user since it was introduced. I recently upgraded my unit and shifted to Vista (x64). So far i have no qualms about the new OS.

Yeah it's probably drivers. It's no big deal though.
I tried it again today on one of my 150gb Raptor drives and it was still sluggish during file opening within Photoshop cs4 - and the brushes are less responsive. I couldn't get it to retain my wacom tablet settings and the Window7 windows opening / closing was not smooth.....but the load screen animation is nice.

Just an aesthetic thing but the blue/yellow colour choice on the shields/icons is really poor...a minor niggle, but, I hope they change it..... :D not a deal breaker:D

fair enough but thats what the send feedback icon on every window is for, just send microsoft feedback and theyll try to prioritize it. But for a beta it is absolutely flawless, no problems my end and its faster for gaming, check this vid out i made.

I work for a small city with less than 100 computers. We use roaming profiles on XP. We have many 24 hour users (like cops and dispatchers) that use a bank of PCs. Having a mixed environment does not work very well. Vista does not like using XP profiles.

So?? What am I do do? I either modify all the profiles and upgrade all computers at once to Vista {not possible} or stick with buying XP on new systems.

So as long as I can get XP, I will have to stick with it.

I love vista and have been beta testing 7. Except for a couple aesthetic changes it does not run much differently than my vista 64. Because XP was somewhat of a success for some reason people were just determined to make vista a failure when it is much, much, much better than xp. Vista was not perfect but it is much farther along at this stage in the game than xp was at the same stage. The problem is that people are just down right ignorant. They forget these things. I will probably save my money for now when 7 comes out because there is no difference but just a different name. If there were a big change like there was from xp to vista I might have switched right away because vista is so much better. I will eventually make the switch but I won't be the first in line.

Hi Ingeborgdot,

I think those on lower spec. machines and notebooks will see a difference when 7 is finally released for sale.

However, those who Vista is working very well for and who are not needing to use it on a cheap laptop etc., may not feel any need to pay again for an o/s - especially not so soon.

I agree completely. We were told over and over it was no good but it is. The blatent changes are small, it is enough better to show it. I love it. I could go back but why? They did their best to kill it for no reason.
