I always always always build my own. What I did with my first desktop, was buy a $200 pc from a friend, then proceeded to strip it and fix it up (by which I mean install some real components, not prebuilt).
The PC I use now is completely custom. Most reliable PC I have ever used.
My Laptop was from a custom manufacturer, so it was prebuilt, but I chose all the specs and such. It was a little too tough for me to get into building one of these, mostly just trying to locate parts. I went with a good but not well known manufacturer, and got it with a blank drive too. Saved me like $300.
