In addition to what richc46 has said, check for services if they are set properly. Please follow below mentioned steps:
1. Click on the Start button.
2. in the Search box, type SERVICES.MSC.
3. Press Enter key.
4. Accept any UAC prompt that appears, and in the Services control panel, look for the following
5. Background Intelligent Transfer Service -double-click on it,
6. Check the Startup type - ensure that it is set to 'Automatic (Delayed Start)
7. Windows Update-double-click on it
8. Check the Startup type - ensure that it is set to 'Automatic (Delayed Start),
9. Now try starting the Windows Update service and the BITS - if you get errors, post the EXACT error message.
