XP is no longer supported at all by Microsoft, not even security updates have been issued for some time now.
XP only lasted as long as it did due to some issues with it's replacement - The original replacement to XP, the Longhorn Project, was cancelled just before the release sate and a complete new project started, this project after a few years was the one released to the public as Vista. Microsoft has always works on about a Three/Four year Cycle ( twice Moore's Law? ), so the life cycle of Vista was more of a return to the standard
(BTW If using XP today just remember to run a reliable Anti-Malware / AntiVirus regime, as XP is no longer being updated in any way)

One of the big let downs that initially saw Vista get a bad rap and the XP fan base sneers was the fact that MS never correctly stated the actual minimum system requirements were higher then what the OEMs were selling at the time with 512mb of memory some seeing 768mb while 1gb minimum 2gb recommended would have better prepared people for the larger OS. 7 and now all the way up to 10 presently with the MinWin kernel having been refined even further still sees the 1gb minimum.
As for continued support some are still running 2000 let alone XP and Vista. So some will still be in need of help despite MS having already dropped support for those two older versions while Vista fortunately has until April 17, 2017 as far as seeing anything from MS that is.
