I had a program quite awhile back, don't remember what it was that didn't exactly like UAC, don't remember what program it was anymore, or if I even get it installed and running, as I recall I plain flat out gave up on it, and don't even remember if I might even have it still laying around some place.

Not surprising - older programs have had issues with UAC *and* restrictive permissions and ownership on certain trees (such as Program Files). There was a lot of work to be done, and many apps that worked under XP flawlessly did not work in Vista.

Temporarily disabling UAC was a short term fix for some programs, but the majority of them have figured out how to work with UAC and play nicely,. VPNs and ERUNT are two notable exceptions - VPN / VNC for some reason does not like UAC, and I suppose it has to do with the mew WDDM versus the old XDM in XP....but that is just a guess.

Disabling UAC also disables the Protected Mode for IE7, which is why I won't disable UAC for good on my system. Protected mode for IE, along with my AV program has kept a lot of nasties off my system.

What's odd, is that for some reason Mass Effect won't run on Vista, unless it is set to be run as an Administrator. I discovered this on my own system, and after reading a Mass Effect Tweak guide. If I wouldn't have found this out, I would be pulling my hair out and making posts trying to figure out why this game won't run on Vista.

That is because you let Mass Effect install to C:\Program Files (X86). That is a protected repository.

I installed mine to a separate HD and have no issues with playing it.

I installed Mass Effect to my 320GB harddrive, and the game still wouldn't run unless I put it in Administrator Mode. This is what I don't get, as I didn't install it to the X86 Program Files folder.

I'm not gonna worry about it anymore, at least I have the game installed and running, and it doesn't pay to go crazy trying to hunting for something, and end up messing up my system in the process.

I installed all my games, including Mass Effect to my 320GB harddrive.

When installing spybot on the desk top I had to uncheck UAC to get it to install completely-- Vista home premuim. When installing same on laptop Vista home basic I did not and UAC is active. I hope I don't have to do this each time I update spybot!!!!
