What do u mean I'm not the administrator??

Ledoux

I'm unable to install any software onto the computer. It keeps saying I must log off and log on as the administrator....I am the adminstrator, and the only user! The computer is new....any information would be appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!

Hi, Ledoux, and welcome to the forums.

Can you post a screen shot of the issue you are having? Most software that runs installers on Vista will know to automatically ask for elevated privileges. If it is not asking you to grant elevated privileges then something is seriously wrong....

This is common in Vista due to programs not designed to work with UAC. Alot of programs are only able to run with full admin privledges, and give policy and/or failure to install errors with UAC (i.e., NOD32 3.0 and powerdvd 7/8).
The fix is easy-
click Start>Control Panel>User Accounts &family safety>user accounts>Turn user account on/off>uncheck, and click ok>restart computer>install software>navigate back to user accounts and check user account to turn it back on>restart computer.

NOTE- I do not recommend leaving UAC off for more time than it takes to install non-UAC compatible programs as this exposes the user to security issues such as rootkits, malware, viruses that would otherwise be unable to run.

Hi Ledoux,

Just right-click the Installer and Select "Run As Administrator"

Do not Turn UAC off as Rive0108 suggested, You will be leaving your computer open to hundreds of Virus`s and malicious programs, web-based exploits via web-browser and many, many other things...

This won't work with some programs. If it did, then I wouldnt have shut off my UAC when I installed nod32 3.0 x64 and powerdvd ultra 8. I keep getting "policy in effect to prevent installation..." errors. The only way some programs will install is if UAC is off.

UAC really bugs me I have to leave it off, is it really that bad to leave it off, I thought it was there more just to make you think twice about what your opening, plus you always have a restore point to go back to if you mess things up.

It is not bad to leave it off. I think that it was designed more for the average user in the security driven world that wanted to make sure that no apps were running without the consent of the user (ie. spyware, malware, so on). It can be a pain sometimes, I shut mine off on my various Vista machines and haven't had any issues.

acadamis is right. If you used XP (no UAC there ...) and did not get infected with viruses or trojans, disable it in Vista. You will not be more "unsafe" than you was in XP. Leave UAC on if you have kids using your computer (or any other user without basic understanding of "online security". Anyway UAC is not a substitute for a good antivirus program (ENOD32 works great in Vista x64).

I thought the same thing about UAC till last night. I picked up the Antivirus XP 2008 virus. Only Avast Pro 4.8 and fast work prevented it from taking hold. I turned on UAC after a cleanup. I hope when I get home it is gone. I will do a boot time Avast Pro scan. Leave UAC on.

I agree with Michael. It is best to leave UAC enabled. If an application fails to install (or run) because of it, even when granted administrative credentials as it would be if you manually select the program installation executable, right click it and select 'Run as administrator' (provide administrative credentials or grant elevated access), then that program cannot, in my opinion, be classed as fully Vista ready/compatible.

Horse manure. There are very very few programs (VPNs being a notable exception to the rule, as well as ERUNT) that require UAC to be disabled to either install *or* run. Startup, however, is a different story - but that can be worked around using WinPatrol to move the startup entry to a delayed startup....If you get policy in effect errors then something in your group . local security policy has been altered to make these installs go sideways.

UAC really bugs me I have to leave it off, is it really that bad to leave it off, I thought it was there more just to make you think twice about what your opening, plus you always have a restore point to go back to if you mess things up.

I bet trying to track down and fix a virus infection will bug you even more.

It is not bad to leave it off. I think that it was designed more for the average user in the security driven world that wanted to make sure that no apps were running without the consent of the user (ie. spyware, malware, so on). It can be a pain sometimes, I shut mine off on my various Vista machines and haven't had any issues.

Wrong.

Linux / UNIX made use of the limited user account (luser) a long, long time ago - it is how things are supposed to be. You can't just run willy nilly through your system being able to do anything you want to - that was the biggest drawback to XP - and the main reason there was such a proliferation of viruses designed for Windows.

You, as a user, may not have any issues. Read SCSRRaidGURU's post - he himself advocated disabling UAC - and see what happened.

UAC *will* prevent most malware infections simply because the installation will require admin privileges, whether it be adding it to a startup registry hive, installing the app in a system directory, patching system files, etc. - these actions are blocked by UAC by default.

Of course, it is only as good as the user - is the user doesn't pay attention and think "Hey, I am not installing anything, why am I getting this? Maybe I should not click allow and see what it was that caused that" then of course that individual is still prone to infection - but it is a solid line of defense.

acadamis is right. If you used XP (no UAC there ...) and did not get infected with viruses or trojans, disable it in Vista. You will not be more "unsafe" than you was in XP. Leave UAC on if you have kids using your computer (or any other user without basic understanding of "online security". Horse manure again. If I never used my seat belt in my sedan and never got into an accident, that makes me less prone to get into an accident and suffer a life threatening injury by not wearing my seat belt in my new car???

That analysis leaves a lot to be desired.

.

My system is set for high security, my wife's 32-bit vista install isnt. She had same problem and in both cases powerdvd ultra and nod32 3.0 required UAC deactivation to install.
Have you installed these programs on a fresh vista install yourself?

Guess what, after writing about UAC yesterday my computer completely started stuffing up and takes forever to do anything it wouldn't complete a disk clean-up and took forever to start up and shut down.

I tried to Restore it to a couple of days earlier but when I tried that I got a blue screen. I tried again same thing, so I started it in safe mode to see if that made a difference, it seemed to complete the restore but now I am still waiting for it to reboot. It has already been about 10 minutes.

I really hope its ok I will definitely be leaving UAC ON now unless there is a good reason to turn it off.

If only I had heeded your warnings earlier.

If only we could all learn by other peoples experience, but I guess that's not human nature

Oh well, anyway while writing this post it has finally come back on and the restore seems to have worked, will let you know if I have any more probs.

And once again GREAT SITE!!

I leave UAC on, it's saved my hide from doing a lot of stupid things to Vista. Without UAC, my system would be so messed up, it wouldn't know whether it was coming or going, and I would have to wipe the boot drive and reload the OS. I'm also setup as the one and only ADMIN, so I can work on things in Vista that need to be worked on, without too much trouble.

One thing I did do, was disable the password logon to Vista for the time being, while I did a little troubleshooting on something, and did notice that Vista loads faster without the password logon, but I think I'm going to put it back in to place for extra security.

-"You cannot upgrade PowerDVD 7 because you do not have Administrator privileges on this computer"

Administrator privilege errors In Vista are caused by Vista UAC incompatabilities. As Johngalt suggests, maybe these issues have been resolved. If you are trying to install software pre-SP1 (2007), then either find newer versions of the program that work with UAC, or just disable UAC to install.:sarc:

Hence it *had* a problem in the past and does not now. I have a version much newer than the one you had issues with - but that was because they had not worked out Vista incompatibility.

Case closed.

I'm unable to install any software onto the computer. It keeps saying I must log off and log on as the administrator....I am the adminstrator, and the only user! The computer is new....any information would be appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!
I don't see how, as 1) PowerDVD is not mentioned, and in fact no *particular** software is mentioned, and 2) we never got any feedback from the OP of teh topic since he still shows at 1 post.
