I did a quick search to see if anyone else has this problem but came up with nothing :/
Im using a laptop running vista as the host ( ad-hoc ) to give my desktop in another room internet. The laptop is wired to a modem so it has direct connection. I made a adhoc connection on the laptop through the adhoc wizard with WEP, and enabled ICS when it asked.
I can connect and get a good signal on the desktop which is running Xp Home. Everything works as it should as far as sharing internet. The only problem is that after a while the laptop starts to loose connection to the internet. This is strange because the desktop is still getting an internet connection but the laptop which is hosting the adhoc acts like it has no connection to the net. The only way to fix and get the laptop to be able to get any internet is to disable the adhoc and ICS. The strange thing is that the laptop has good connectivity to the net right after making the adhoc and turning ics on, but after a while it will start to loose connection and then completely loose all connection to the net.
The desktop never looses connection, just the laptop...
I dont understand why the laptop would loose connection if its directly wired...
You've done a great job explaining a very perplexing problem. I have to ask one very particular question though - does the gradual loss of connectivity occur regardless of whether a person is *actually using* the laptop?
I suspect is has to do with the laptop wireless connection being set in device manager to be allowed to turn off to save power by Windows - and thus, even if you are using it externally through the ad-hoc the laptop itself is not being used, and thus shuts the wireless off....
If that is not the case, then it cold be a faulty wireless NIC - you might test your laptop via wireless only and see if it actively loses connectivity *while* you are using it, with out the ad-hoc in place.

Im not loosing any wireless connection , the host pc thats running vista starts to loose its ability to have internet. Its like since i have ICS on the host pc turned on, its only allowing my Desktop to have internet and not the laptop. This only occurs when someone is trying to use the host pc to browse the net. And this only occurs after a few hours of having ICS on. Im having trouble figuring this one out.
