Vista wont recognise any usb device hotfix kb940199

For those with just one hard drive, assuming that you have enough space, use the Disk Management (right click My Computer, select Manage, then select Disk Management) and shrink your current Vista partition as much as it will allow. Once that is done, create a new partition in the space provided, format it and let it mount it to a new drive letter, the system will pick this for you. Now, make a note of the partition sizes, try to keep them as distinct as possible (If you drive is a 250 GB drive, then shrink the original partition to 150 GB and let Vista create a second 100 GB partition).

Now, you can back up your files to the new partition, and then perform a clean install ***only formatting the larger 150 GB partition)

Remember this is an example - use whatever numbers on the partitions to make it obvious to *you8 which partition is which - when you go to format your partition you obviously want to format the partition where Vista is installed, not where you stored your files and such....

Of course, this point is pretty much moot if you have a Vista recovery partition from an OEM, as I think those format the *drive* and not the partition, but I may be mistaken....
