Hey There,

I could really do with some help, every USB device I plug in will not work,
when i plug something in like my mouse for instance it does come up with new hardware found but cannot locate or install drivers, I have the instalation disk with the drivers and these ARE installed, also it was fine before, when I first purchased my mouse logitech MX Air I simply plugged it in and it recognised it and installed the drivers did'nt even need 3rd party software now it says "unknown device" and cannot find the drivers either from the disk or windows update, it is like this on every device even on simple things like usb hubs and memory sticks, it recomends that I download Hotfix KB940199 as this may resolve the problem but i get an error message pop up everytime saying this does not apply to your system (it is the x64 hotfix) argggh how frustrating PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP I cant use half the equiptment I have because of this problem,

Many thanks

Rickie

Hello rickieh2008: Sorry your having trouble.

Try reinstalling your chipset driver. You can find it either at your computer manufacture website or the companys website that built your motherboard. Offten that can force the USB drivers to reinstall and begin working.

If not...

Have you installed anything new into your system lately. This could be a long shot but prehaps you have a conflict.

Please post back with your system specs this could help others help you.

Good luck.

I have just descoverd a page that is talking about this exact same problem and it seems it is not just limited to me, by the looks of it scrolling around various websites hundreds of people are affected,

It seems to be Microsoft's fault (great job guys) and is caused by a recent security update which was released last week. (link below)
USB Devices Killed By Vista UpdateOf course in true microsoft fashion you cannot uninstall this update so will have to roll back my system and set updates to manual untill a fix is released, will let you know how it goes but dont see any reason why this would'nt work, Its just really frustrating shouldent have to go through this because of there cock ups agggh

Fingers Crossed

Kind Regards

Hiya Rick

I was just going to point you to a "MS Update Kills USB Devices" page, but looks like you found one already.
Many WUpdates can be rolled back if problems arise, but this seems to be from a Windows Defender Update and that's a different story...too bad eh.

Let us know how this works out for you please.

Hey Chappy,

Yea what a joke, quick question im running windows vista 64 OEM version on my self build, windows is activated but last time I had to do a roll back it un-activated and had to call up microsoft's auto activation line, If I roll back again and this happens again will it allow me to re-activate, would be the 3rd time + if not looks like I might have to wait for microsoft to pull there finger out and release a fix, at least they have admitted the problem I suppose thats something

Hey,

It now looks like it is not a windows defender update, but an update for SP1 microsoft have said the following

"Microsoft contacted El Reg late Thursday to point out that the Windows update currently playing havoc with a number of USB devices was in fact Vista SP1 pre-requisite, KB938371 and not an update for its spyware blocker Windows Defender.

If this is the case does anyone have any tips on removing it ?

Can you check that those 3 files are in your windows\INF folder?
- usbstor.inf
- usbstor.PNF
- USBSTOR.SYS

If not, copy them from C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbstor_xxxx
and past them to your windows\inf folder.
Reboot and try to install your mouse or other usb devices.

BTW, did you install progs like daemontool or alcohol? it could come too from a conflict with the scsi drivers.

if you go to device manager and disable the standard enhanced pci-usb host controller your usb devices should work

Yep, but maybe some files in your inf folder are corrupted.
Will not cost you anything to replace all of them (usbXXX, etc..) with good ones.

Hi thanks for your help

Yes copied and replaced all the usbxxx files into the inf folder but has made no diffrence im still getting the same messages when i log into windows "cannot locate driver software"

I have exactly the same issue. It was a recent clean install (previous week) on old hardware so I went through and installed all the available windows updates before I really got to play with the system.

Had the 4GB memory issue during install but used the "install on 2GB system then upgrade to 4GB" work-a-round successfully. Also after initial install I downloaded and installed the latest Nvidia nforce package and the full ATI graphics driver package, both went quite smoothly.

However I am completely stuck with the USB issue as decribed above. I had a plethora of USB devices attached during the initial Vista install but i didnt really check their status until after trying to go through and use each device so I can not say if things were ok before the windows update or not.

Basically what happens is as described in the orginal post on this thread, you install the Vista 64 bit drivers for the perhiperal and then after a reboot or successful install you plug the device in and the recently installed drivers are not picked up by Windows, instead windows asks you to confirm that you want to install 'drivers for the unknown device' or 'usb reciever' or 'usb hub', all very generic terms, not like in XP when it was able to identify a specific desciption of each device. Then it searches the windows dirs, searches the internet and fails to find anything useful. So everytime you reboot you have to go through that excercise.

I actually went out to buy replacement peripherals with ones with Vista certified badges but still no luck.

Bizarrely for example my logitech bluetooth mouse does actually work but each time I load windows it asks to install the drivers for the 'usb receiver' if I tell windows to just ignore this device and not load the drivers then the mouse is actually disabled!

I managed to get a logitech webcam working (logitech again ho hum) by uninstalling everything listed under USB in device manager. Previously it seemed I had all the USB hubs on my nvidia board using MS drivers even after installing the nforce drivers, not sure if that is normal or not? Now even the USB drivers dont seem to be installed correctly but the webcam now works! Even though I have to go through the process of windows searching unsuccessfully for drivers each time i boot up or plug the cam in.

My very basic Sandisk card reader, like the webcam, is listed now under usb devices in device manager rather than their correct category of card reader of capture device which is strange. But Windows still searches unsuccessfulyl for the drivers.

The Epson printer drivers installed very painlessly so possibly all the problems relate to non-independent power source USB devices? Might be worth checking it out.

So yes the system is a right mess so soon after a clean install. Have disabled Windows Defender and gone back to 2gb without much luck so might try a clean install and not use the windows update until i have successfully installed each device.

Hi Potto,

I did eventually sort this problem, after a 2hr telephone conversation with microsoft we tried many things to get them to work again but all to no avail,

Eventually microsoft said that what had happened is an error had occured during the windows update instalation process (although you would not of known this) as a result it has courrupted key system files, and im afraid occurding to microsoft the only way to repair these files was to re-install your operating system clean (you must reformat your hard drive you have this option when you boot from your vista disk)

The major problem with this of course is you will loose everything and is very hard to back up data onto another device if you have no usb's, if you have a second hard drive drag documents etc you want to keep onto this then you will be able to access them and put them back onto your C drive when you have re-installed vista.

Quick Question do you have the update KB938371 installed on your machine as this is the update that caused all the trouble for me, this update would have been installed before SP1,

Durning the installation process of vista make sure you select the windows updates to manual so you can choose what to install,

Once your vista is re-installed install all the updates available UP TO KB938371 when i did this i installed nothing before hand just re-loaded vista then straight to updates, you will not see all the updates at once install all the updates required checking that KB938371 is not one of them. Reboot install reboot install etc etc

When eventually you see KB938371 available for update what i did was make sure nothing else was running and rebooted before installing, INSTALL BY IT'S SELF just the one update KB938371.

Reboot your pc and if it has installed succesfully and your usb's are working then your done you can carry on installing future updates i.e SP1

This worked for me it seems that when that update is installed with others it causes problems,

I know this is such a pain in the arse and you shouldent have to do it but this is the only way i could get mine to work, nice one microsoft

Hope this works out for you good like mate i know how frustrating this can be.

Kind Regards

Rickie
