vista update error

The error code that I get is: "WindowsUpdate_80070002" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

I found this thread using google. I get this same error. Vista Home 32bit, not sure if it's premium or not (it's my wife's computer and I am at work).

I tried the AU Check, it ran and didn't seem to make any changes.
I went to the M$ website and it was registered with windows genuine advantage.
I went to update.microsoft.com and it gave an explanation page how windows update is builtin and loaded the windows update from the control panel.
I disabled antivirus and any other process that I knew didn't need to run.
I tried installing the standalone version of Service Pack 1. It got ~70% through then failed.

This is a laptop only used at home, Dell XPS 1330. I'm kinda afraid that the problem might be due to proprietary Dell crap installed on the computer, or Dell drivers or something.

Anyway, I think i've exhausted all the suggested made in this thread. Am I stuck with reimaging the drive and hoping it installs then (in which case it wouldn't be the dell software/drivers) or is there more I can try? I'd prefer to not image if I can avoid it, as my wife has a ton of stuff that would need backed up.

I tried the first two methods previously. I'll try the third one when I get a chance, it might not be until Wednesday or Thursday.

I should also note, that the problem only seems to be with the service pack 1, everything before and apparently after has not had issues.

Hi LostOne, it is good to have you on the board.

What happens if you restore to original factory installed condition? Is it working normally without sp1? Or is it a clean install or upgrade?

Probably if you start a new thread and post your spec and background of the problem or what you have done would provide better help in assistant.
