If the above articles do not work we will need you to validate you windows, you can do this by surfing to Genuine Microsoft Software and clicking Validate Windows at the right side.

What exactly do you mean when you state "update windows"?

Are you talking about an update through Windows update? All of them, or just one?

There's an update I know that fails install on a lot of x64 systems (even though it's a specific x64 update), but it can be ignored. I'd just disable it.

Hope I can jump in here...

I'm having all sorts of problems with my update as well on my Vista-Business 32 bit machine.

The error code that I get is: "WindowsUpdate_80070002" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

I've already searched the forum and googled just about everything I can think of. Yes, I've deleted the files and folders; created at .bat file and run that as MS said to do.

One symptom that I may see is that the update site sometimes wants to install new update software, and when I tell it to do so, it fails. On the other hand, I can access the update file fine from the start button, and it loads and finds the updates it wants. Just now, it finds SP-1 waiting. That download begins and at about 45% of the download, it stops and I get the above message.

I've also inspected my Belarc Advisor and it reports that I'm also missing:
Q921598
Q951338
Q951546
Q951596
Q951944
Q953404
Q954326
Q954478
as well.

I've run SFC and retrieved the "[SR]" codes for "cannot repair" and found two:

systemsf.ebd
mfcm80ud.dll

both of which MS-knowledge base report as not being important/part fo Vista OS. Hate to do a complete, clean install of my OS, but don't know what else to do.

BTW - I have found that I only have v1.1 of .NET framework. Could that be an issue??

Thank you all for this wonderful site!!

Hi, Steven!

And thanks so much for your help.

I downloaded the latest WU file and loaded it. Restarted. And went to WU to check in. Sure enough, it found SP-1 not installed and I told it to install.

Unfortunately, same result. Same error code.

I'm going to try now your last resort tool: the AU check. I'll run it and report back in in hopes that his can help others.

Steven - downloaded the AU Check and ran it and it worked just fine. Now, I'm going to see if WU will function as advertised.

Steven, back again. WU failed to install the updates.

In the WU "main" window, there is a button that says, "Get updates for more products." This is the button that tries to load additional MS software that also fails.

I'm now at quite a loss as to what to do. Could there be something in some settings that I have wrong? Or, do I need more .NET files (I only have v1.1 on my machine)?

Hi JAC,

Vista uses .net 3.0, you shouldn't need .net 1.1 or others , Have you tried manually downloading SP1 from the Microsoft Website?

Download details: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone (KB936330)

Steven - Can you believe it??

After following all your instructions, ending with the running of "AU" and changing the settings on my WU control panel to "auto" everything, the program downloaded all of the updates, including one for my nVidia graphics card!!

THANK YOU!! Your hard work and good advice really worked for me.

Now, you say that Vista needs .NET 3.0?? Where should I get it from? The MS site? and do I just tell it to download and install??

Thanks!

Hi JAC,

Thats good news to hear

Steven - OK!

You say .NET is included in Vista. Would it show up in my Programs list (control panel)?? All I see there is the .NET v1.1.
