Install Windows Vista SP1 RC through Windows Update!
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC is available through Windows Update. Experience the WU based Vista SP1 installation by following 4 simple steps.
Windows Vista SP1 RC distributed through Windows Update will be applicable to Windows Vista machines that are running on any of the 36 languages supported by Vista RTM.
If you already installed the Service Pack to your machine by using the standalone package, you must uninstall before you scan Windows Update for Windows Vista SP1.
Systems running on Windows Vista RTM require as many as three updates before SP1 can be installed. These updates are permanent to your Windows Vista systems. Windows Update will detect your system configuration and offer the prerequisite packages that are applicable to your system. For details, please see the instructions below.

My Computer

I want to know, has anyone notices this:

eval.gif

And the DATE 10-15-08 that the "eval period" lapses?

Is this a TIME BOMB of some sort and is my whole Vista system gonna poop out on the 15th of November?

This will piddle me orf, cos I FINALLY got VistPoo tweeked out so no more Bleu cheese screens and no more lockups.

I am highly suspicious of Micropoopoo cos, although the RC works swell, they will probably foodle up the actual service pack. I hope they leave it pretty much as it is, cos my memory usage is back to XP-level.

I became a business partner and Downloaded the dvd image with 32 bit and 64 bit install. burned the image to dvd and installed without a hitch.Here's the link for the early release;

Windows Vista

Otherwise we'll see the actually public release in March

I installed the update last night 2/19/2008. My results so far are:

much lower frame rates in Unreal Tournament 3

Razer Lachesis control doesn't load on the tray anymore (kb panel still does)

there are no updated windows index scores (for hardware >5.9)

my Cyberlink PowerDVD h.264 codec no longer offloads video onto my AVIVO system (ATI HD 3870 card). -> watching a 720p h.264 now uses 60% of my cpu while the codec is running.

I think I'm going to uninstall and wait for the real thing to come down the pipe on its own. I hope this isn't the final. Nice install overall. And the problem could be in the ATI drivers, though they have been stellar with Vista x64 for me thus far.

The link I posted is for the final release. They're letting partners and OEM builders get it first so they can supply their own clients. It's a nice clean install off the dvd. Took about 1.5 hours. It still didn't answer my external drive problem. Didn't give me anymore usbII or 1394a drivers for that wdc 1.5T external drive. But it was worth a shot.

I downloaded directly through windows update and it did the same four step + one reboot cycle. In the one place that I just displayed, it listed it as a beta. I don't know why. There are definitely some compatibility issues though. I uninstalled and my system is really fast and happy again.

Cheers,

Rob

From an email that has just droped in my inbox from microsoft

Special thanks to those of you who tested SP1 RC Refresh 2 (6001.18000). That was our very last release candidate and it was, in fact, the very same bits as the final release. (It was a Release Candidate in the truest sense of the word.) Those of you who installed the SP1 RC Refresh 2 will not need to update to the final version-you already have it.

As also you might have read, our beta testing identified an issue with a small set of device drivers. Some beta participants who were using Windows Vista and updated to Service Pack 1 reported issues with these devices. You can read more about this in this blog post (Windows Vista Team Blog : Announcing the RTM of Windows Vista SP1).
In order to provide the best upgrade experience possible to our customers we are starting a new, short-term beta program (4 weeks) aimed at refining the final experience. NOTE: There will be no change to the RTM bits.

Judging by the last quote above, there could be a small update to SP1 after it is released to the public.

Agreed, it must be the final. But my system had two things that didn't like it right away: 1) Lachesis, the holy and great god of gaming mice, and 2) my ATi card. I'm assuming it was the card (though I don't know), since two of the problems I had, had the video card and it's drivers as a common feature. Really, this is correlation, not causation.

Not to mention they left the description "Beta" in the SP1 RTM, which means to me that it will need to be changed a little before the push out to the general public.

just to let everyone know. I still haven't had any issues with this release on my system. Is just as fast and stable as before

Yota - the first time I installed, I used Windows Update. But it seems, that since I uninstalled SP1, update doesn't give me the option to install it anymore. I therefore downloaded the DVD image and burned the disc.

An important difference was this -- Windows Update allowed it to install on my system but the DVD would not without me first reconfiguring my system. The issue is that my system is the English US version with Chinese PRC language pack installed. The WU install had no problems with this, but the DVD denied me because of the language pack. This would be an important consideration for anyone considering the install. After uninstalling the pack, I was able to continue. (Hopefully, the pack will be reinstallable).

I think I will wait for the final release. Besides, I don't even see SP1 as an available update on my Windows Update.
